I feel like the only one who didn't particularly like this. Somehow managed to make an interesting period in history kind of dull. Not being a Mark Rylance fan also didn't help lol
And yeah the lighting and volume didn't help.

I like Mark Rylance but to me he was too old for Cromwell whereas Ben Miles who played the same role on stage was better by a mile.

Mark Rylance looked like a kicked puppy and made me want to kick him some more. (To be clear, I have never kicked a puppy, honest!!) The plays were far superior. I had my doubts about Ben Miles (far too pretty) but actually he was great, he brought humour and single-mindedness/ruthlessness. Also Lydia Leonard - excellent. |

I'm another who found this so disappointing, as a fan of Mantel's work - I don't know why they gave it to Peter Kosminsky to direct: he seems humourless and has favourite actors who he casts regardless, it seems, of their suitability here.

Something to look forward to. And those people who've been holding back on reading the third of the trilogy, just not wanting to end the reading experience, might as well get cracking now!

I'll be all over it, being the Tudor geek that I am. Adore the novel trilogy, and did like the series but didn't think it fully captured the thrust and mayhem of what Mantel managed to put across on the page. Cromwell as as the narrative voice was always calm and calculated, and Rylance did portray that, but in losing the author's surrounding prose the show at times did feel a little flat I think.

We are currently rewatching the first series.
Just finished the first novel, the next two are lined up.
I initially thought 'Oh no, I don't want to spoil the books.'.
Then slapped myself in the face, as I know darn well what happens without watching the series or reading the books.

It might actually be a worth while experience to watch the series and then follow it up with the remaining novels, as just with the first, the book is so much richer and more detailed. It's like looking through a window and then deciding to actually go into the house instead!

I'm really looking forward to this. It was such a long time ago I watched the original series I can't remember a lot but I do remember it was very enjoyable so don't think I'll be disappointed.

Great to be back with them. The difference in ages for actors didn't bother me as much as I thought it might.
