This is a really fun show if anyone has the chance to go before January. Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad are absolutely hilarious and elevate the material to an amazing level.
I’ve seen this described as Book of Mormon meets Title of Show and that’s about right! The “show within a show” is purposely bad, and with Rannells and Gad playing every role, it is just so funny with non stop laughter.

Saw this in previews and I agree it’s a brilliant night of theatre, but it’s all down to the two stars. They elevate what is actually rather poor material into something electric. I know the show-within-a-show is meant to be bad, but often it’s isn’t funny bad, good bad, clever bad. It’s just… bad. Listening to the original off Broadway recording really highlights how juvenile and poorly written the songs are. In fact, the show is at its best between the songs when Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells are allowed to deliver their comedic double act with a witty script and no obvious constraints. Having said that, they throw themselves into the music and really sell what could fall very flat under other performers, though I can only imagine what they could have brought to strong material.

A rare occasion where the book is far better than the score!

Not having seen this ans only from reading the posts on the board, this sounds like another case of The Producers.
There are many reasons why The Producers was such a success, but one of those reasons is the commerardery between Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
Both Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad have a close friendship from doing The Book of Mormon together so the can bounce of each other. The challenge is that because they are so familiar with each other that they remain focused and don't break character and burst out laughing!

Coincidentally I have just seen a short clip on Instagram where Nathan Lane walked on between Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad, wearing a cap and introducing himself as Max Biallistock!

I walked out at intermission. I thought it was the lowest common denominator kind of humor, where you could guess the joke and punchline so far in advance. It's a show for Gad/Rennells fans, and it offers nothing if you don't care for them (I don't, especially Gad).

I haven't seen Gutenberg but had lunch with some friends today, who were in town for Thanksgiving. They loved Gutenberg and said that Senator Schumer was the "celebrity" who went up to the stage one day this week.

I half a fun time with it, laughed out loud a few times, but if it wasn’t for the very talented two stars this would never have ended up any where near Broadway.
