Wes Anderson’s latest arrives in cinemas and while with its play within a film format it tried a little bit too much to be meta and came across a bit too smart arsed at times, I enjoyed it : if you don’t like Wes Anderson films then this won’t convert you and I think he needs to dial back the celebrity cameos for a while, this is absolute chock full of them and some of them only get screen time of a couple of minutes (Tom Hanks didn’t get much screen time but was miles better in this than he was in the dreadful Elvis)
Like all of Anderson’s films it’s exquisitely designed and shot, and has a cool soundtrack (in particular Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawleys number over the end credits): I’m just hoping it doesn’t inspired even more dead eyed TikTok tomfoolery.

I've lost patience with Wes Anderson's films, which I enjoyed at first but now find too samey. Even late-period Woody Allen wasn't this repetitive, though WA presumably has no difficulty continuing to obtain finance and as you say, Marwood, his latest is jam-packd with celebrities. I can only assume they appear in his films because they have so much fun off-set... if only the audience members had so entertaining an experience. |

I thought it was better than The French Dispatch but he is locked into a cycle of the same things in every film: the amount of guffawing at points that aren’t amusing seemed to be a ‘look at us! we think this is really amusing!’ cry : I’ve seen all of his films at the cinema since Rushmore in 1998 and I had the same thoughts of him being locked in a cycle when I saw The Darjeeling Limited 15 years ago but I keep going back for more and with things like Grand Budapest Hotel he has given some kind of reward but part of me is disappointed at actors like Edward Norton being reduced to five minute parts in films like this (what the hell happened to his career after American History X and Fight Club?)

I went to see this yesterday and fell asleep a few times. Beautiful to look at but as usual with WA films, style over anything else, very little narrative and zero emotion in the acting. The ‘spot the famous actor’ is getting a bit tired now isn’t it. I enjoyed The Flash a lot more than this. Maybe I’m turning into a 16 year old nerd!?

I walked out of The Flash well before Michael Keaton showed up: A) because of cretins on both sides of me in the cinema (one taking photos of the screen on their phone and the other talking bollocks and making stupid whooping noises with his brethren on the other side and B) what I saw just looked shoddy so I haven’t regretted it since |

It was funny and it was moving and I loved the various Batmans. I know it’s not high art or anything but I was well entertained- also felt it was better than the Spiderverse- which was visually amazing but a very repetitive concept which I found ultimately boring. |
