So I caught a screening of this last night at the BFI.
It’s pretty good.
Regardless of what you think of Alexandra Bourke as a performer, there’s no denying she’s the lead in this film. I have to say, she’s pretty engaging.
The whole film is very London, in terms of the dialogue and locations.
Set on a housing estate in Lambeth, Candice (Bourke) is a single mother raining a teenage daughter, working in supermarket whilst going to auditions for a Tina Turnereque show in the West End.
Out of prison for a year comes Travis, her partner and her daughter’s father (Natey Jones).
Things are going well when they see a sequinned pretty red dress that Candice can wear to her auditions. So, here Burke starts to shine as shine as she sings and shimmers her way through the audition process, unaware that at home Travis is delving into a bit of transvestism, until she catches him.
Temilola Olatunbosun has the daughter Kenisha is also extremely good, figuring things out and finding her way.
This is a story of acceptance- Travis accepting this is who he's in make-up and in that pretty red dress.
Candice accepting that this is what makes him happy and comfortable.
Candice accepting that Kenisha could quite possibly be a lesbian
I have to say, I quire enjoyed it. Some interesting camera angles.
Natey Jones is physically quit a large, stocky, tattooed bearded black man-quiet a formidable presence so to see him made up is quite a head-turner.
Try and catch this if you can.
