Cynthia Erivo in I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky at Stratford East.
I saw Lucie Jones in an amateur concert in Cardiff prior to x-factor.
I didn’t realise so many future names were in Posh.

Maybe they were not unknown at the time, but I didn't know who they were. Benedict Cumberbatch in Hedda Gabler Eddie Redmayne in Red Tom Hiddleston in Othello Hannah Waddingham in Beautiful Game Paul Mescal in Red Shoes Taron Egerton in The Last of the Haussmans James Norton in The Lion in Winter Monica Dolan in King Lear and The Seagull I often check the old theatre programmes I keep, and get surprised at the names that didn't mean much for me then and are now fairly everywhere. I saw most of those and did recognise Cumberbatch Anyone who saw the Plantagenets trilogy at the RSC in 1988 probably encountered Ralph Fiennes, David Morrissey and Jason Watkins for the first time as well as Kevin Doyle, late of Downton Abbey

Michael Gambon as Othello, also Escalus in Romeo and Juliet and Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais in Saint Joan at the Old Rep, Birmingham 1968. Anna Calder-Marshall as Juliet in R&J and Joan in Saint Joan as above. Derek Jacobi in the title role of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and Mr Puff in The Critic (a double bill) at the new Birmingham Rep. in 1972. Yay, hello, another Brummie? Anna Calder Marshall was brilliant wasn't she and years later, recently saw her in Rory Kinnear’s play about disabled sister. Still brilliant.

Ramin Karimloo as "Pirate / Policeman" in Pirates of Penzance, Wimbledon, running Tuesday 12th to Saturday 16th March, 2002. Pirate King was Gary Wilmot, Ruth was ... Su Pollard. Ramin is 13th listed in my programme.
Ditto to the Anna Maxwell Martin in His Dark Materials, NT Ditto to Hugh Jackman in Oklahoma, NT Ditto to Hannah Waddingham in Spamalot I have a programme from La Cava but Gawd I hated that show so I'm not digging it out.

Hugh Jackman in the Australian version of Sunset Boulevarde in 1996. My friend went to school with Hugh Jackman and said even to his very untrained eye it was obvious he was going to be a superstar from an early age. He also said he had great fun trying to subtly change lines and feeds during school productions to try to mess Hugh up. Being the consumate professional this would annoy him greatly.

I've been in a few productions with people who went onto great things. Mark Strong, back when he had hair, Joanna Riding in her first professional show after drama school, Catherine Russel, Sean Pertwee. They were all doing Rep, back when that was a thing.
And I saw Hannah Waddingham in Lautrec. She had a fantastic solo called 'Look Into My Eyes' that bought the house down.

I had np idea Emily Blunt was in the Royal Family or Michelle Dockery in Pillar of the Community (was that the production with Damien Lewis at the National?). I see that Emily Blunt was in Vincent in Brixton the following year - I didn't notice her then either I saw Roger Allam in Way of the World at the National in 1996 (not the first time I'd seen him) which I see also had Catherine Tate and Julian Rhind-Tutt. And a pre -Stacey Joanna Page in What the Butler Saw

I know that both he & Jennings were also in The Scarlet Pimpernel that season. Yes Grandage was in it too. I also saw him as an actor in Edward II at the Royal Exchange in 1986 (directed by Nicholas Hytner - Iain Glen was in that too). In 1989 I saw Grandage in the sensational Nunn/McKellen Othello. On a similar theme, I saw Greg Doran as an actor in The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar in 1988 - the former featured Sher in the lead giving one of his most bizarre performances. Alex Jennings was quite possibly the best thing in that production of Antony and Cleopatra - just based on the text you'd think Diana Rigg and Denis Quilley were perfect casting but in practice there was literally no chemistry between them at all.

Luke Thallon in Crazy For You at the Guildhall. Also Toheeb Jimoh in Fiddler on the Roof at the Guildhall. Both were very impressive but, of course, no more so than some of their student colleagues who haven't had similar breaks. Such a hard business to go in to.

Andy Serkis (and Lorraine Ashbourne, who is now his wife) in the title role in a Hungarian musical called 'Doctor Heart' at the Royal Exchange in Manchester in 1991.
Also at the Royal Exchange, Kate Winslet as Geraldine in a production of 'What The Butler Saw' (1994), and Hugh Grant as Eric Birling in 'An Inspector Calls' (1986).

I'm a bit reluctant to say Tom Hardy because he wasn't exactly unknown when did The Man of Mode.
