The production will be a cheapened non-replica with around 30 actors and 14 musicians. Prices, however, are extremely expensive for what we´re used to. Word of mouth is Gerónimo Rauch will reprise his Phantom.

My friends contract in Madrid will be finished by then so no excuse to visit. I’d have definitely booked otherwise. I’d be interested to see how a non replica version works and I’d definitely love to go back to that beautiful theatre.

Past are the days of decent non-replicas, like in Budapest. This is from the Swedish production, which closed last week: Carlotta during Hannibal: static.wixstatic.com/media/0b5e68_0dbbcf3090f64bb79e7899fc4eb870e1~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_507,h_314,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/0b5e68_0dbbcf3090f64bb79e7899fc4eb870e1~mv2.jpg Il Muto Rehearsals: static.wixstatic.com/media/0b5e68_c5a646b6a4d642d8829a10c8198bb0be~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_507,h_314,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/0b5e68_c5a646b6a4d642d8829a10c8198bb0be~mv2.jpg Angel of Music: static.wixstatic.com/media/0b5e68_85d46dd3a0c14da3a3cab404bbb8588d~mv2.jpeg/v1/fill/w_507,h_314,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/0b5e68_85d46dd3a0c14da3a3cab404bbb8588d~mv2.jpeg Genuinely looks like a budget high school production. Although I do acknowledge that the Phantom looks pretty cool: static.wixstatic.com/media/0b5e68_37e132d16110485d8370fe67b75e6f72~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_507,h_314,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01/0b5e68_37e132d16110485d8370fe67b75e6f72~mv2.jpg Edit: Links don't work. only half the adress is actually a link, you need to manually highlight the whole thing from static at the beginning to the ending .jpeg, then paste that into a new browser window and the photos come up.
Though warning: They ARE ghastly.
That said, Kristianstad is a small regional theatre, they wouldn't have the budget for a lavish production. A new production in the Spanish capital with Antonio Banderas producing and probably doing a lot of the promotion will certainly be a few steps up. Hopefully. I may be in Madrid in spring 2024 and would quite like to take a look.

Is Antonio going to play Phantom do we think? Rumour has it, it will be Geronimo Rauch again. If sales are bad, maybe Tony will step in for some weeks?

I'm surprised Tony can step anywhere in those boots! 🤣

Antonio Banderas only briefly attended the auditions as part of the promotional campaign the week tickets went on sale. He isn’t artistically involved in the production and confirmed he won’t be playing the Phantom nor has the voice for it.
It’s produced by LetsGo Company and APS (the production company between Antonio and Andrew Lloyd Webber). I hope APS will pump some money into this, as my experience with LetsGo doesn’t fill me with confidence regarding production values.
But it’s the same new non-replica production that will play Trieste in Italy in July, with Ramin Karimloo as Phantom (in English), before moving to Madrid.

Although I do acknowledge that the Phantom looks pretty cool IMO, the Phantom looks as if he belongs in a slasher film. A bit Halloween/Mike Meyers-ish. The head Carlotta is carrying reminds me of the mannequin heads used in hairdresser training. That is community theatre/secondary school low budget. Ouch.

The cast for this was announced this morning: Gerónimo Rauch as Phantom, Talía del Val as Christine, and Guido Balzaretti as Raoul.
It's predictable casting (Valjean, Cosette and Marius from the 2010 Spanish production of Les Mis), but I think they will be very good. And of course, Gerónimo previously played the Phantom in London.

I saw this in Madrid this week. I was pleasantly surprised by the production, but my expectations were low.
Having seen photos of the set and costumes from Italy, and experiencing previous LetsGo productions in Madrid, I wasn't expecting much. But I thought the set and costumes came across much better in the theatre than they have in photos/videos. But it's impossible not to compare it to the original. And while the set was nice and worked well for a lot of the show, the Phantom moments are poor in comparison (as is his makeup, which looks like a stick-on transfer). A few almost-cringy moments and some effects are like an AliExpress version of the original.
The cast are excellent, so the performances were very strong. The sound system is also great, and there are 14 in the orchestra. However, if this production had opened in London in 1986, it wouldn't still be running today.
