Tracie Bennett originating a Sondheim role. There's a surprise. I read a tweet from her this morning stating that her first professional show was a Sondheim and now she'll be performing in his last- she's come full circle.

Tracie did the first UK production of Merrily in Manchester in the 80s. She played Mary.

I always forget that the Bridewell did Saturday Night first because I saw the New York version with David Campbell and Andrea Burns many moons ago. I'm not in any way doubting Tracie's abilities, it's just there's no shortage of American actresses of a similar age and type who might have been interested in originating a Sondheim role.

People have already begun speculating that it's going to transfer to Broadway with Bernadette Peters lol. Is it possible that Traci is actually an equity swap while Bernadette does 'Old Friends' in London?

I’m seeing it on 23rd December from one of the cheap(er) seats: like I’ve said elsewhere, I’m not one to give an informed opinion on Sondheim, or musicals in general but I’ll be quick to let you know if I thought it sucked 😝

Is this likely to be seen in London at some point do we think? Maybe at the Menier?
I hope we also get a cast recording to preserve his last score.

I think we're likely to have a better sense of what, if any, future this production has once it actually starts playing in a month.

I’ve reread the article.
I love the link between Oklahoma and Here we are.
The choice of venue makes perfect sense. I suspect after the premier other venues will be considered
I’m excited at the prospect of the spoken interludes. I think the mention of using a “dance arranger” is to manage our expectations. I suspect / hope that with Tunick and Gemignani onboard it going to be a bit more than underscore and perhaps something veering into sprechstimme.

Do we know if the score is completely finished?

Do we know if the score is completely finished? If you read the article it gives the sense that Sondheim was happy for it to be produced in its current state and they as a creative team were happy considering it a complete package. Whether, as was customary with Sondheim, he would have gone in and tinkered with it during previews or for any subsequent productions is another story but it seems that they were all satisfied with the show and any perceived lack of music in the second Act was a creative decision to reflect the state of the characters in the piece, borne out of Sondheim's inability to conceive of a way of musicalising the events of the second Act.

Interesting that both DB & CM said they never thought it would happen. I'm guessing they never knew the full story as detailed in the Vulture article.

I'm so hopeful to see Pacific Overture in London in November. It's the completion of a bucket list.
I hope this new musical is inventive and satisfying. It does have to be Sondheim's best.
My top 5 favorite shows, in order.
Passion - Cried and felt satisfied on Broadway. London production added an intermission as Ball's arse, ugh! Sweeney Todd - Scary as all. I can did a Sweeney London tour for a while. I also saw Tiny Todd at the Circle and while not great, it was fun. Into The Woods - The original Broadway production was perfection. Those that followed not so much A Little Night Music - Loved Dame Judi most at National. I was floored. Company - Was too young to see original. Love both Raoul Esparza and Adrian Lester. Boyd Gaines in 1996 was also great as he was supported by Broadway legends or soon to be legends.

Lyric alert
“Life in this room, in this gor-geous God-damn room.” What is a theater, except a gorgeous goddamn room? And what are the audience and actors doing, living in that room together for a brief span, except attempting to separate themselves from the violence and ordinariness of life outside?"

I've got 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie', but can't find the film of 'The Exterminating Angel' anywhere. I've seen the Thomas Ades opera though, and loved it.

If you’ve got a multi region bluray player, you can get the Criterion version of Exterminating Angel on Bluray from Amazon for £26 at the moment: I’m going to the US next month but don’t know if I will be going out of my way to find copies of these films

They all have Criterion sections in their (dwindling) movie departments.
