The scene were Gielgud (Gatiss) tells Burton(Flynn) that shouting is a power weapon that should be used sparingly. Gielgud was always accused of just "singing" Shakespeare, that is reciting the lines beautifully as if they were a poem. This was by proponents of Olivier who was seen as his great rival and who favoured a far more emotional, physical, and in some cases (like Coriolanus) shouty approach to the plays. So that line sounds like a very minor dig at Olivier. Gielgud was rather sensitive to noise. Well into the dress rehearsal of his 1968 production of Don Giovanni, with lots of people including the entire board of the ENO present, he noticed some chorus members who he had not so far directed. He rushed down to the front of the stalls to call a halt while he told them what to do but the orchestra ploughed on relentlessly, with Gielgud trying to make himself heard. Suddenly his voice rose above the din in an anguished wail: ‘ Oh, do stop that awful music !’ Very insightful Thanks

"However, particularly in the first half I couldn’t get on with the level of SHOUTING and overacting. "
I know shakespeare invites shouting but this was on a different level and unpleasant, I was smiling while being subjected to this for the simple reason I had a flashback to the recent excellent The motive and the cue. The scene were Gielgud (Gatiss) tells Burton(Flynn) that shouting is a power weapon that should be used sparingly.
3 stars just and one of those was for Peters' fool and the cast singing.

"Myles was off A LOT when he was on Broadway."
I wonder if it is due to this production being very dance intensive and the toll it takes on the body. What's his background ie from a dance academy

What's Mr Frost's tenure on this UK production. Will it me short i.e just to kick start it off.
Named as such it's a pity he is not working the boards over in Drury Lane.😀

Anyone know why today's matinee was cancelled. Cast illness. To many of them off to cover the show safely. They had the same problem earlier in the week. Thanks 👍

I visited this glorious show again this week which underpins the masterful talent of Sondheim. Only gripe, very minor, it would of been nice to see one of the younger cast members perform a solo without any ensemble. An amusing comment I overheard from two audience attendees leaving the theatre at the end of the show. both were in agreement that the show was fantastic, but one said to the other " I would have preferred less of the one with the funny voice" Peter's voice maybe a shadow of what it used to be, but she's earned her stripes and for the purpose of this short outing. It was a pleasure to see her up there on the boards.

For the first time in my life I have sold some theatre tickets. Was booked for Sunset this coming Thursday, but having been so impressed by Rachel Tucker 2 weeks ago I just could not face Scherzinger again. I can’t buy her as Norma Desmond at all, and all the twerking and finger snapping is cheap and classless. Relieved I won’t have to hear her impression of a foghorn again during AIWNSG. I saw this last week for the second time, first viewing early Nov. I preferred Scherz's earlier interpretation. This time she has gone into overdrive with all the antics, almost playing for laughs. That's what confidence does for you. What's with the extreme slowing down with the speech at times?

I think Sondheim is by far the best musical theatre composer of all time and none even come close. Aligned with the first bit but others I do feel come close Cole Porter and I Berlin. Not even close I'd but ALW in that category.

This production was exactly what I would expect from the Charing Cross Theatre and is not that different from the often mentioned, much loved Woman in White-production a few years ago. I still think using the full orchestra was a mistake moneywise Completely concur

we can’t blame the Director, actors or production in this case in my opinion as a whole. They’ve tried and succeeded to honour what was written on the page. Hear! Hear! Really liked how you become connected to the band, almost as if they were part of the family,in an indirect way. Impressive vocal performances from the leads.

Saw this yesterday bravo to the cast member who covered the role of Freddie, delivered a solid vocal performance. He received one if not the greatest applause of the night.
Okereke was good but she does tend to shout her way too much through Act 2, were a degree of decorum would be expected after being transformed into a Lady. May be a directorial decision?

"And I couldn’t work out why they decided Fairy has no wings" Went through my mind also, but she had wing stubs
Is there such a thing as a fallen Fairy like an Angel?

She definitely looked tired and/or zoned out for many numbers the other night I also went on Tuesday and thought her performance in the first half was right on, but after the interval she seemed flatter. (I thought she was particularly stiff in 'Blow Gabriel Blow'.) I'm wondering if a body can manage this schedule now (10yrs Later) she's 46 & not been on the boards for sometime. This 8 shows schedule can be demanding considering she's on stage the majority of the time in this show. Relinquishing a matinee to her cover may help (her but not the producers) or is it a case she just needs more time to build up the stamina.

Saw this on Sunday I kind of understand the lack of appreciation for the production and for Kauf's Dunkel hier aria he was clearly not at his best. However, I was completely baffled by the lack of applause for the Quartet song in Act 1 which was sung impressively by the singers albeit not at the level of Gundula Janowitz et El in Vienna but still very good.

'how mad is Pericles?!' Somewhat exacerbated by the fact that it's a touring company so everyone is playing multiple parts. They needed community help like the recent National theatre production to spread out the work load. This production I felt was very flat & laboured, it just never took off.

2019/20 to be announced on 14 May. It is quite strange they have opted to announce so later this year, considering all the other big hitters in the world have already released their 19/20 seasons.

Andy Nyman's portrayal of Tevye left me stone cold. His accent seemed to cover a wide global territory including Scotland, the USA, France, Turkey and North London. The entire cast seemed to have accents from various locations across the globe too. Nyman's singing was shaky (to put it nicely) at times, the Sabbath Prayer being a real humdinger and it really looked to me like he was generally marking the show - maybe he was having an off-night, but if so, it was REALLY off. Completely not convinced by Andy Nyman's Tevye, like above his accent morphed into varies dialects -I would add an Irish twang to the above. The weakest Tevye I have seen to date. The Savoy production was far superior but I was impressed with Stewart Clarke's Perchik. I even preferred the semi-staged Proms production a few years back to this.
