Got in the queue 15mins after it went live and it was like 23000 in the queue lmao. Yeah I bailed shortly after.
Well done to all who grabbed some.

As it's coming from Elon's version of Twitter, sorry to say, I'm not surprised. Most of the people moaning are bottom feeders living in the dark ages.

So I abandoned booking Opening Night, thanks to your insightful reviews, and purchased a ticket for this.
£55 for restricted side view. A preview night too. "Ow much!?" she exclaims. (I paid half that in a similar seat to see Angela Lansbury...granted that was 2014 lol). The Apollo prices put me off for ages, but at least I know I'll have a better time here with something I'm familiar with rather than risking seeing Sheridan Smith and co. for a cheaper price.

Something about watching it back making it more mortifying than watching it live. And you see the audience on their feet and clapping as the inane tune goes on, and you think what the hell do we become when we’re in the theatre? The definition of sheep?
It maddening and also hilarious. I think that's entirely their point. Does seem a bit contemptuous of anyone who thought they were seeing a nice linear musical with Sheridan Smith in it, and doesn't realise that they are the butt of the joke here. Nevertheless, I'm now addicted to this, and if you watch each performer individually they are doing a selection of archetypal ingratiating bows. Where Jamie Lloyd had a 'don't even smile' shtick at Sunset Boulevard, here they are *prosecuting* the nature of ovations. (aah 'prosecuting' - I had to, because you just know that's what was said in rehearsing this sequence). At the start of the video, the woman in white seems to also show her butt to the audience (memo to ALW for WIW revival); Sheridan Smith half heartedly seems to join in. 'You're the butt of the joke' reference? I've just noticed that 'bum man' is the only one who comes back for a second go. There's no holding him! Gonna rename him Bumjamin Walker. Of course it's had to be him lmao Also it looks like he flips the audience off too? Watch his hand as he turns back.

Wow, this show got crucified. Surely it can't last all the way till July with that reception?

You know I was wondering why there were so many tickets available for a Sheridan Smith Show. Usually they'd get eaten up no?
Reading this thread has been fascinating, I thank you for entertaining me on this drab work afternoon!
Was interested in this as I was intrigued by the premise, albeit I'm not really a musical person in all honesty, plus seeing Benjamin Walker live on stage would be nice.
But it sounds like I may have to give this a miss? 😟

Heheeeee!! Excited by this, if only as productions that hire C. Edwards puts them straight to the top of my priority list (shocking nobody).
Never seen Sophie Thompson or Suzzette Llewellyn act live so can't gauge their acting capabilities just yet.
Love a good intimate theatre with affordable tickets. Also feel free to correct me, but I swear I heard this was a musical rather than a play?

Agreed. Well done ATG 👏 Thought we were trying to get more people *into* the theatre not drive them away.
Goodness knows how Gen Z must feel, where a good chunk of Tom's fanbase lies. Yes there's the under 30 tix, but they will be/have been eaten up in no time, leaving many in the dust. Do better.

Just wanted to confirm something if possible. Somebody on Reddit asked if the under 30s tickets are for UK residents only? I assumed they wouldn't be, thought the criteria was just to be, y'know, *under 30*, but now I'm not so sure...
I just know the NT's similar scheme only allows UK residents.

So after getting extremely hyped up for this, I entered the website to book, and then...glanced at the prices 🙃
I don't mind the front row high stage slightly restricted seats...but not for £80 bleedin' quid. Less than half that if it's being advertised as such.
Most of these prices are not justifiable, despite how iconic FT is, especially considering I took three people to the Only Fools Musical at TR Haymarket for £50. Good seats too!
Needless to say I am disappointed. Will take the day seat route I guess...

This play was made for me (no clues as to why).
FT is my favourite sitcom of all time, and the characters are at least in good hands. I am highly looking forward to this, I don't care what anybody says.
The chap who plays Basil I saw playing Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps a while back so he has the energy and physical comedy chops certainly.

Good for Tom. Excited for him, but I hope the stage door afterwards doesn't turn into a Cumberbatch at the Barbican situation 😅

He will be replaced by Zachary Quinto. An intriguing choice.
This will be Quinto's West End debut I believe?
(TimeOut leaked a promo picture of Quinto dressed as Gore with Harewood as Buckley Jr.)

Charles Edwards is not returning as Gore Vidal due to (presumably) a scheduling clash. Amazon's Rings of Power season 2 begins production in October. Rehearsals for the play start around the same time, ready for a November start.

The HEAT

I went to the open air Minack Theatre on Tuesday to see the Surrey Opera production of Don Giovanni.
The actors wore steampunk inspired outfits (suede jackets, top hats, corsets etc) and it was 24°C. Mild compared to the rest of the country but still quite hot.
Some of the audience had to leave at interval as they couldn't handle the heat. Granted I did get burnt, but I enjoyed it very much. Plus the sea breeze helped and by Act 2, as the sun went down, we had shade for most of the second half.

Told ya it would come back 😉
So yes, I heard it would be Wyndham's to begin with too, but as Noel Coward is literally next door, it wasn't so far off the mark anyway.
Casting unconfirmed as of yet, frustratingly. I know Syrus Lowe is coming back as James Baldwin (confirmed on his Twitter bio) but Justina Kehinde (Aretha Franklin) won't be as she is on a UK/Ireland tour with Girl From the North Country until March '23. Emilio Doorgasingh who played Vidal's partner Howard looks likely to come back too. Seemed to hint he was returning on socials but can't say for certain.
As for leads Harewood and Edwards, I'm uncertain but optimistic. Edwards is (or was) busy filming season 2 of the Amazon Lord of the Rings show, but has expressed keen interest in returning if BOE got transferred. No idea with Harewood, but he very much enjoyed his time back at the theatre after a long hiatus.
I think I said previously James Graham was very eager to keep the two leads at least for the transfer, so let's see...

Caught this tonight. Very crude and naughty, but very much enjoyed it. Felt myself laughing at all the wrong things and doing the whole "hahaha *gasp* ohhhh *tut tut*" thing. The dance numbers are very well done. Sat in row P stalls and actually the view wasn't bad. Can't see the top of the stage but nothing happens up there anyway. Got discounted tix for this via Headout, and the auditorium was full to bursting even on a Monday evening, so like it or not, it continues to rake in them pounds. Do you happen to know who you saw in the cast? Thank you Sorry for the belated response!
I'm pretty sure I had all the main cast except Nabalungi and Elder Price who had their understudies/covers take over (played by Amandla Elynah and Ben Tyler respectively).

Wonderful play. I might have shed a wee tear but nobody saw anything, OK? Only drawback was the legroom in the dress circle was atrocious, even for someone quite small like me. My knees didnt appreicate the tight space. Was there tonight and the mayor guy did a tribute to Mary/Bonnie and it was very sweet. I could see quite a few cast members wiping their eyes behind him as he delivered his speech. It got filmed and a selfie of her with the audience was taken so they may pop up on socials? (Hopefully you won't spot me waving like a loon!) Glad she got a standing ovation on her final night too.

Bloody hell. Over the moon for Charles Edwards (not biased at all).
But he's up against Ben Daniels (already a holder of an Olivier previously) who had a stonking 2021 with Normal Heart. Quite the unenviable position. Eek!

Gerry Anderson got to me as I adored Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Cpt Scarlet as a young 'un.
One that made me genuinely tear up though was Andrew Sachs. As Fawlty Towers is my all time favourite show, losing Manuel absolutely broke me.

Very much 50/50 for customers masking up inside my local ASDA yesterday. Nearly all the staff were maskless.
I'm not judging, I'm just pointing it out.

Friend managed to get tix for a matinee yesterday so ended up seeing it again! Then James Graham shows up after the show. Had a good little chat with him. He's a really lovely guy.
He said a transfer is very likely at this point. It's not absolutely guaranteed and nothing has been set in stone yet, but given its success despite the virus situation, it was inevitable.
Next Spring has been suggested, and James is very eager and optimistic to keep David and Charles in the leads.

They were back on last night as I was there (finally got to see it via a lucky dip ticket - ended up on the second row!!).
Had a word with Charles Edwards later and he said it seemed to be a "suspected" case but that was quickly resolved. Maybe it was cancelled as a precaution?
Anyway, this show was superb. Spectacular performances from everyone but particularly the two leads. Have never seen much of Mr Harewood but I was spellbound by his acting. Loved the facial ticking.
Also, shocked nobody's mentioned this, but if anybody enjoys the thought of seeing Mr Edwards topless, you're in for a treat.
