This is disappointing to hear. I must admit that my heart sank when they announced that Lily Allen had taken over the role of Katurian from Aaron Taylor Johnson. It just seemed like a wacky casting decision but I had faith in the creative team which sounds like it may have been misplaced. I'm going at the end of August so hopefully she'll have grown into it by then.

Every performance now sold out!
Very strong word of mouth online after last night's performance.
It's a shortish run - could there be plans for a transfer?
Edit: Now NT site showing it's not sold out whereas it appeared to be so a few hours ago!

Hopefully not the same producers as Bath's Into the Woods! well...no...it's isn't because this was produced by Chichester? I meant Second Sight or whatever they're called

Early days. Wait til the advertising, media appearances and word of mouth kicks in. The Pillowman didn't seem to be selling for ages, but is now really picking up. I also remember being really surprised that the transfer of The Doctor didn't seem to sell for ages but it was packed when I saw it towards the end of the run. Slight edit to say that they could do with a few more flyers, news ads and media appearances.

Had been due to start last night, the 10th. Now Monday 12th. No reason given, probably just could have done with the extra time.

Very surprised nothing has been announced for the Savoy, although if the proposed Annie run is no longer happening maybe they’re left scrambling for something else. I could see a play going in there for a season. I'm not sure if either Matthew Broderick or Sarah Jessica Parker are available but could Plaza Suite go there? It was produced by ATG on Broadway. Another option if Jessica Chastain is available is A Doll's House. This was a good shout, Jon.

Andrew Scott is a superb actor and he will be great, no doubt, but this type of show just doesn't appeal to me greatly. I too would likely sit watching it wishing it was a fully cast production. I have seen some great one person shows- Scaramouche Jones with the late, great Pete Postlethwaite always springs to mind- but they are not generally my favourite type of show. I completely understand this point of view. But having seen a few "Uncle Vanyas," for me, it's precisely having the one actor playing all the parts that is intriguing to me. Especially since Andrew Scott is one of the best stage actors there is, able to convey emotion like almost noone else. In particular, having one person embody three such different types of masculinity that are Vanya (defeated caustic childlike whiner), Astrov (romantic wise alpha male) and the Professor (pedantic insensitive father figure) stands to be fascinating and revealing. For me, my main concern about this is how difficult it will be to maintain the tragicomic tone throughout, so that we can laugh and cry and be enlightened all at once: It would be easy to get alienated from the real horrors at the heart of the play and laugh raucously at everything from a distance, and it would be equally easy to get overly serious, to avert the above criticism, and miss laughing at ourselves, which for me, is a great deal of the point of the play: you laugh morbidly so you can survive the horrors. If anyone can get this right, it will be Andrew Scott, who can find the heart of characters so well, and reveal everything that is funny and everything that is tragic about the human condition simultaneously. This could easily be a season highlight, I feel, precisely because one person stands in for the whole human condition, as we all do in our own lives. Fingers crossed. You have made me want to see it now, Steve!

Wonder if this will transfer?!? ATG have co produced so the plan is for a transfer at some point next year I believe. Would be surprised if it didn't. Think Eilene Davidson is co-producing with ATG.

So... having never seen one of these types of shows, how does it work. Do they actually play every character in the play? Jumping between voices/mannerisms etc? I've seen one-person shows, but only when they were written to be for one person. If it's clearly supposed to be a number of characters played by a full cast like Macbeth for example I think I'd find myself just sitting there wishing I was watching a full production. Andrew Scott is a superb actor and he will be great, no doubt, but this type of show just doesn't appeal to me greatly. I too would likely sit watching it wishing it was a fully cast production. This left me completely brokenhearted. It's been four days since I saw it and I'm still processing it. I feel as if under the effect of a heavy hangover, after an excess of… well… tears, and very sad emotions. Magnificent cast. Every single actor in it shines. James Norton, of course, bears the heaviest cross and shines the most. It’s amazing that a person who played so convincingly an intense, chilling, intimidating psychopath can also convey such a level of vulnerability. He managed to keep such sadness in his eyes during the whole play. His Jude seems forever stuck in his dismal childhood, unprotected, defenceless, with no feeling of self-worth, no feeling of one deserving love, always to be exploited by any vicious, deranged grown-up that might come his way. The play doesn’t spend much time helping us to conciliate this boy with the brilliant lawyer he becomes, but I’m watching Succession and can’t help feeling that there are some similarities between Jude and the rather ruthless Ken Roy, who seems to be a good person at heart, seriously damaged by an overwhelmingly brutal father that he tries to impress, please and emulate. If only I were brave enough, I’d love to see the play again. Thanks for this review. I saw the matinee today and this encapsulates very well how I felt leaving the theatre. I so wanted things to work out for these characters. The performances were superb and I'm in awe of James Norton for giving every fibre of himself to convey Jude's fragility and vulnerability. Like a broken bird who could never be fixed. I also thought Luke Thompson's portrayal of sheer love and helplessness in the face of a force he couldn't quite understand was wonderful. It was a gruelling watch but this cast is so supportive of each other. You can just see it at the curtain call. An unmissable and unforgettable experience.

They were filming it today and the cameras took up quite a bit of space. My original seat in Row H became restricted view so I was offered alternative dates after I had booked, but to be fair the NT found me another really good seat in Row E of the stalls when I said I couldn't do the other dates.

Saw the matinee today and I'm firmly in the 'loved it' camp. Brilliantly acted, stylish, elegant and in turns moving and gripping. I thought Johnny Flynn pretty much nailed Burton's voice. Gatiss was just superb as ever. Was there too and totally agree. Mesmerising at times. Front row was wonderful. Gatiss delivering an award worthy performance. Flynn too. Just great. I really, really liked it. One of the best things I've seen in a long time. Quite moved by the end.

I saw this tonight and enjoyed it very much. Propulsive staging and Tom Hollander and Will Keen were superb. I was in Row H in the stalls but I would recommend booking a seat in the dress circle as the staging is raised.

Very much in because of JLM but god I hope this is more like the Jeremy Herrin who directed Best of Enemies and NOT the Jeremy Herrin who directed Glass Menagerie And we the Jeremy Herrin who directed People, Places and Things and Our House. I think (hope) The Glass Menagerie was just a blip.

You'd really hope ATG members might get a 24 hour window ahead of the presale rabble. I agree. You pay your 35 quid you should get *at least* a two hour window ahead of the pre sale link folk.

Neil Gaiman is saying it's the Noel Coward. The Whats On Stage article unhelpfully doesn't say which theatre. I thought The Motive and the Cue was going to the Noel Coward. Will be disappointed if that's not happening.
