Sounds like 2022/2023 was a disaster for Hampstead

Dunbar is very peculiar casting for this role. “There's only one thing I'm interested in and that is putting on a musical version of Taming of the Shrew”

Oh I very much wasn't thinking that - genuinely interested in what changed for ceebee as they were fairly positive about it to begin with! Oh, i gathered, no probs. Im just surprised the tone of talk on here is that its a flop in some way, when by most metrics is a critical and commerical hit for the NT

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the show, but judging from the critical reviews, word of mouth ( given the run is sold out) and the voters tally above, a lot of people don't think its terrible!

Sally Ann Triplett is not continuing with the show after this run. I think Daniel Rigby is unlikely to return. I wonder why. After Anarchist, i imagine hes in demand as a lead now

Is it just me or are there a number of theartres (Young Vic, Old Vic, Royal Court) who have really slowed down/staggered their announcements? No season of work or more than one show announced after the current show. Feels like for the Royal Court, they are in a holding pattern until the new season is announced/ready from the new artistic team Old vic maybe feels like they are developing less shows and just waiting for something hot to come in

I think some work needs to be done in the second act, but its very good as is, and i think would be fine in the West End
i suspect the most likely scenario would be it have another run at the national end of the year though, and then transfer Summer/Autumn 2025. Hopefully they can hang on to the cast

Mix of commercial considerations and what the cast/creatives want to do
over 10 years gap is fine IMO

I thought this was fine. Seemed to emphasis the comedy over the menace in the piece, i never really felt any danger from the characters. Joe Cole especially seems to be playing his character as if it was a comedy.

I saw on Twitter (X) that Rishi Sunak was in the audience the other night. Was he the small child picked on in the audience?

I have not seen the film, so do not have that to compare to. I do like the music of Elvis Costello, and I did very much enjoy Girl from the North Country (not Black Country as I stupidly misremembered during the interval, much to the hilarity of my husband). Cold War opens promisingly enough with some pleasant folk singing and character set-up. Oddly, the two strongest characters, played by Alex Young and Elliot Levey, vanish and barely reappear. What a criminal waste of two fine talents! Instead, the piece focuses on the on-off relationship of Zula and Wiktor set against the backdrop of 1950s Poland when it is effectively controlled as a satellite state of totalitarian Russia. That that love story fails to engage is principally because we know so little about either character, certainly not enough for them to be interesting, and the behaviour we witness shows Zula to be utterly unlikeable and for us to wonder in astonishment how Wiktor could be so pathetically in awe of her regardless of how badly she treats him. Luke Thallon's acting here as Wiktor seems to be seeking to emulate the style of Andrew Scott, but without the latter's ability to sound entirely natural when employing forced and random mid-phrase pauses and trailing off sentences. It's not a bad performance, but it's not a great one either. Anya Chalotra creates in Zula a person I cannot fathom. I do not understand what drives her or who she is. There's not even an aura of mystery to excite fascination. Some of the dialogue is risibly bad, and the presentation of national politics and state repression of citizens is cartoon-like, which works in a satire but not in a serious drama. The cigarette smoking was so overdone -- and stunk to high heaven even in the rear stalls -- that it became a distraction, as I started to make bets with myself as to who would be next to light up and how soon. Actually, that distraction was not entirely unwelcome as it offered some relief from the ennui imposed by the dull narrative. The songs were nice. Two stars. Act 1: 19:33-20:44 Act 2: 21:06-22:13 I enjoyed it more than you but I do agree the main characters are pretty unlikeable. I enjoyed the dialogue more though and politics.

This was great I thought. Good performances, very funny. Really enjoyed Daniel Rigby in this, similar to his anarchist performance
Looked very sold out. I reckon if they want to rework some of it, it may be back at the NT end of this year

What about closures? Well all these new shows have to go somewhere. From just a quick look at how tickets are selling, wouldn't be surprised if we lose BTTF, Mrs Doubtfire and Guys and Dolls. Guys and Dolls only just extended so I'd be surprised if they closed early.

Going by the poll, more people like it (3 stars or more) than dislike it. Even if your benchmark is 4 stars or more, a majority of people on the forum liked it Baz seems to say it's transferring after some work has been done on the second act In such small samples, with no controls, it’s impossible to tell what the public think. The only measure of success worth a damn is box office takings. The only use for ratings on Theatreboard is to find an overwhelming consensus - when it happens. Even then, there’s no guarantee an individual person will find a show to their personal tastes. The show ratings are a consensus of generally like-minded people (in that they have an above-average interest in theatre) who have actively signed up to this forum, read the Musicals forum and then chosen specifically this thread, and then seen the show in question and given an arbitrary star rating (often without explanation or justification in the thread itself about how that rating was reached - be it a bad experience at the theatre, a poor cast on the night, the show reminding them of their ex - etc etc etc). Oh and this… Well, 8 people have rated it 5 stars so far at the time of writing, and 12 people have rated it two stars or less. This would mean by the above logic that 60% more voters believe this is a poor or very poor show than a brilliant one. It's pretty much sold out, so seems like the public has spoken! The reviewers have raved about it for the most part as well Not sure why you're comparing the 5 stars to 1 and 2 star reviews. I'm seeing it next week so will review it then. But by most metrics, it objectively seems popular.
