I've just watched the film of this and it's certainly a curious, limp affair. did anyone see it at drury Lane, or remember who was in it. I remember it not lasting long though. was it good?

I know Sally Ann Triplet snd Sinitta's mum, Miquel Brown, were in it and i think the American leads might have come over with it, but dont quote me on that.
Best Little Whorehouse is a great show, but it's definitely not a Drury Lane size show. I always wonder why Sweeney Todd went there as well, despite it not doing well at the Gershwin in NYC.
Alot of the stage songs were removed for the film, with Dolly adding a few of her own (I Will Always Love You being the obvious one) characters changed and added and making Dolly and Burt have an affair as a central story. I like the film but the stage version is better.
Does your version of the film have the Burt Reynolds song, Where Stallions Run, included?

Thank you for the mention of Where stallions Run, and no, it wasn't on the DVD but i found the soft focus, misty pastoral clip on youtube. I'd still like to see a stage version to see if perhaps the 'villian' had a more satisfying ending other than losing his wig, Perhaps some sexual hypocrisy would be involved. Yep the film just sort of peters out really. One hoped the Chicken ranch would have come back in all it's glory. I wonder if the stage was a little more raunchy, though burt in his boxers was pleasant enough. and Dolly is pretty amazing.

I was in a production of BLW back in 1989- ish. I was only 15 at the time. Its a fun show to do.
The ending in the stage version is pretty much the same. No comeuppance for Melvin, the chicken ranch gets shut down and the girls go on their way.
2 songs that i love from the stage version that weren't in the film are Doatsey May and The Bus From Amarilla. The very first Actors Fund Concert in NYC was of BLW Starring Emily Skinner and Andrea McArdle. Its well worth watching on YT.

One hoped the Chicken ranch would have come back in all it's glory. I know you mean at the end of the show, but it did come back eventually in the musical sequel: The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public. I've seen a few small pub theatre versions in the UK but my first viewing was at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide, Australia in 1981 with Lorraine Bayly of The Sullivans as Miss Mona. Sublime! |
