I will be travelling to New York in a few weeks and will be there for my 26th Birthday. I have booked a few restaurants already including La Masseria (a nice Italian recommended by American family we are visiting) and think we will hit up Joe Allen before the Music Man on the Thursday. We are seeing Cursed Child on Friday at 7pm and I'm looking for a nice early dinner/late lunch place for before then. Maybe somewhere fancy but mainly just great food and not stuffy.
We have been to quite a few of the big name chefs restaurants in NYC before such as Daniel Bouloud so hoping for somewhere a bit original!
Any recommendations much appreciated! Thanks!

The Meatball Shop: www.themeatballshop.comOne of their locations is on the corner of 53rd and 9th which works well for a pre Broadway show dinner. |

Highly recommend Dinosaur if you like barbecue food. I went to the Harlem one, the food was unbelievable.

Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Times Square is a rite of passage for any theatre fan, they have singing waiters! It’s not a posh restaurant though, more of a fun touristy spot with hamburgers, milkshakes etc.
Sardi’s on West 44th Street, again near Times Square, is a more fine-dining option whilst still being Broadway themed. It has portraits of various Stage and Screen stars up on the walls and famous people have often been known to go there. (If you’ve ever seen Glee, Sardi’s is where Finn and Rachel run into Patti LuPone!)

I found the food in Sardi’s distinctly average and the service was hit and miss, nothing I’d note about it apart from the caricatures on the walls. Joe Allan’s was a bit better but the food wasn’t exactly amazing either (I visited both in the space of a week when I last visited NYC in 2019).
I preferred P.J. Clarkes on Third Avenue to both, it also has a long history of celebrities visiting there over the years (among them Sinatra, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and Nat King Cole) plus it was mentioned in Mad Men.

The food at Ellen's Stardust Diner is awful - not worth it even for the experience. Afraid I have to agree. Sardi's we didn't even stay to eat. We expected something very different. We were the only ones in there at 5pm and felt very uncomfortable. They did a prix fixe (no ala carte whatsoever) which also made us uneasy. We had our glass of expensive wine and left. |

I've been to Ellen's and Sardi's. Ellen's was a terrific experience. Sardi's too. Neither for the food but just the being there!

Another place I would recommend is Mémé: memeonhudson.com/We went to the Hell’s Kitchen location for brunch last Sunday. The food was great and the service wonderful. |

One plus of going for breakfast is that the coffee has free refills so after you’ve finished eating you can just stay for as long as you want with unlimited coffee and unlimited performances. |

All of the times I’ve been to Ellen’s I’ve been alone! I don’t care at all what anyone thinks of me being on my own - I want waffles and show tunes and dammit I’m going to get them. Ended up having a really nice chat with the couple on the next table on one occasion too.
Get there for when it opens and you won’t have to queue, then just stay as long as you want

Nobody will give you funny looks, eating alone. That’s just something you see in movies. I live in Hells Kitchen, around the corner from most theaters. We have a ton of places on 9th and 10th Avenue, every type of food you can think of and I still go to Joe Allen before shows occasionally - I’ll always love it there. About 10 years ago, I was dragged to Ellen’s by a family member visiting who wanted to go and I still haven’t forgiven them. |

Over priced lukewarm food. Be prepared to be left with plates surrounding you on other tables. It’s v v busy. Bit disappointed on our last trip |

Peter Luger is is always a good choice but if you don’t want to go out to Brooklyn to eat then their sister restaurant, Smith & Wollensky, in midtown is also excellent and convenient enough if seeing a show before or after.

I second the Smith & Wollensky recommendation - I just sat at the bar and had a burger and a couple of glasses of wine and it was exactly what my jetlagged self needed!

I'd be shocked if anybody in New York looks twice at someone eating alone. I've eaten solo at Jean-Georges and several other restaurants in NYC. The most common response is no response at all. Occasionally, the waiter or maitre d' will ask where I'm from and express appreciation I've chosen their restaurant. For Stephen, if you have time during the day and enjoy food, look into food tours by Ziggy. He also has a food blog that might have some useful ideas. eatingwithziggy.com |

Hells Kitchen has loads of great places. If you want somewhere close to the theatres and reasonable (for NYC), I quite like Victor's - an institution of a Cuban restaurant next to the Neil Simon (formerly Alvin) Theatre.

5 Napkin is great. I had dinner there last night before a show. And then of course around the corner is Schmackary’s so you have to get one of their incredible cookies. I suggest Maple Bacon, if they have them the day you’re there. |

Thank you everyone for the restaurant advice. It really was a terrific trip being able to see amazing shows and be out and about. New York felt buzzing again with people so happy to be around.
This time we didn't hit up the recommendations as our family ended up making other plans for us but will share a few great new things we did/places we visited that might appeal to others.
- Bar Blondau at the Wythe Hotel Brooklyn. A stunning bar on the 6th floor of this cool hotel has incredible views of Manhattan and one of the best Negronis I've ever enjoyed.
- Bateaux New York Premier Dinner Cruise (I thought it might be corny but it was stunning with nice food, stunning views and an overwhelming sense of the scale of the city- loved it)
- Citybikes hired and cycle round Central Park. I had never been to the North side of the park so the bikes allowed us to cycle all around on a lovely sunny morning!
