This surprises me too, as in all the years I've seen him on stage (pre Sherlock too before you wonder) he has always been superb. I thought the production was weak, but he was pretty good and I'd be amazed if this was true. Most of the cast were wearing mics, due to the lack of ability of most of them to project their voices and those mics were quite obvious if you were near the front. I was quite close and couldn't see an earpiece. I guess people will keep their own view on this either way.

I was shown a photo of Cumberbatch signing autographs at stage door after the show where you could clearly see that it was still in his ear. I'll see if I can dig it out and find it. Seriously? You would think that a person using earpieces would be that careless that he would go out to see his fans (who would definitely examine every single hair in his nose) without taking out expensive and supposed-to-be-secret equipment? Am I the only one who doubts this can happen? I am also doubting that a trained professional actor can't learn the part, again, knowing that each end every day while going on stage he will have thousands eyes examining him.

Hahahaha! Yes, it's DEFINITELY more likely that there's a conspiracy to cover up that a professional actor can't do one of the most basic things a professional actor is called to do than that, say, said actor has a bluetooth device for his mobile phone that he made sure to put in his ear before leaving the theatre.

Believe me those fans catalogued and analysed every second of him at stage door (the particular nutty contingent obsessed with his marriage in particular) so they would have seen, shouted etc. Also given a) the hype b) the backlash I think the dirt would have been well a truly dug, and splashed over the internet/tabloids at the time if that were the case.

Yup. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this 'earpiece' rubbish comes from the same contingent of amateur sleuths who think they can tell the state of someone's pregnancy and marriage from a few single-frame photographs of them at the side of the road taken from a long-lens camera and seem determined to find the worst possible interpretation of everything.
His Hamlet wasn't award-worthy, but he certainly wasn't using an earpiece.

I saw a few making long impassioned rants claiming that Marvel paid off Steve Furst and the other hosts to pretend that Cumberbatch is popular.

They're hilarious right up until they're actively libelling people, which I have seen. They give 'fandom' a bad name.

Maybe they meant codpiece instead.

Nicol Kidman. How tall is that woman!!! But amazing to see her there. . I was sat front row and when she walked onto the stage I thought exactly the same. She must have worn flats and walked in a hole all the time she was stood next to Cruise. One thing though.....ugly hands, like skeleton fingers. I really didn't like the Lady Gaga mash up. The only decent performance was Rob Houchen, the other guy was bent double all the time with a painful expression on his face, the first woman who came on sounded laboured and struggling and Alison Jihear (sp) looked like she'd walked in after taking a nap.
