Adrian Mole is a modern classic! I'm excited! Heard really good feedback from when it was in Leicester. Everyone moans that there's not enough investment in new musicals so we should be supportive and optimistic when theatres like the Menier give it a bash

Unfortunately I can't bring myself to care about another British children's musical.

Im stupidly excited about this - what a great way to support new musical theatre.
Everyone complains that us Brits cant produce a good original musical compared with the Americans, then when a show is developed and worked on we all complain?

Adrian Mole was the book of my childhood. Being the same age as Adriian when it first came out It appealed to me and I've read the whole series.
It sold millions of copies, so I can see the appeal of them doing a show with such a huge audience.

Well for a start it isn't an original musical if it's based on a book. Oh let's not start this again, Miss Saigon, Hamilton, les mis, sweeney Todd, west side story, hairspray, all based on something else, its harder to think of a fully original successful musical

Look it's nice that they're doing something new and not another revival of an American musical, sure. But there's nothing risky or inventive about this show. It's a family-friendly musical (which almost always do well) based on a well known book. Not only that, but it has supposedly been disappointing in its tryout run. So I think it makes complete sense that people aren't super excited about this.

Sure, but let's not call something original when it isn't. When people talk about an "original musical", they usually mean that the music is original - especially written for the show and not adapted for it from existing music.

I would call that an original score. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Original_musicals

I would call that an original score. Okay, when most, ordinary people talk about an "original musical", they usually mean that the music is original - especially written for the show and not adapted for it from existing music.

Again, not in my experience. I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to it as that. When you google 'original musicals', the first thing that pops up is the above Wikipedia link, that fits my definition.

"Musical productions where all the content was written for the musical and does not pre-date it." (wikipedia)
Ha! We will have to agree to disagree. I'd say that definition, which I agree with, excludes the use of pre-existing book or music or lyrics but includes adaptations of pre-existing book, music and lyrics.

If that was the case, they'd have adaptations listed beneath the definition and they don't. But yes, agree to disagree.

I go by [title of show] rules for an original musical. Musicals have been based on external sources since time immemorial, but @snutte has a valid point here.

I now have 'Original musical, an original muuusiccaaal' in my head. (Frankly as it's kicked Joseph and his Dreamcoat out I'm happy enough with that)

OK, we've agreed it's probably not an original musical
Anyone know if it's running in rep?
(sorry)

Is Alexandra Burke playing Adrian?

Oh wow - i popped into a meeting and appear to have started a war. I think we all knew what i *meant* by saying Original Musical, even if it might not be the dictionary definition anyway. I'm not sure i read any reviews of this in Leicester, but the word of mouth i heard was all very positive? As long as its sensibly priced and not Menier silly prices i'll be there!

Certainly not a war, just a healthy debate.

lol I used the word 'new' anyway. I'm chuffed a homegrown show from a regional theatre can make it to London, might encourage the rest of them to be braver. It got 4 stars in The Guardian, The Times and The Telegraph so I'm definitely checking it out.

I'm surprised Adrian Mole is having a run in London. I saw it in Leicester and left at half time. The audience in general seemed underwhelmed.
That said, most things I love shut early and vice versa so perhaps it'll be well received.

Well I for one welcome a new musical instead of endless juke box shows or revivals. When are tix out?
