BBC iPlayer have added all 3 series of Toast of London. And if you like that and trashy 80s horror, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is on All4 too.

SEMI-FINAL: Portrait Artist of the Year ( featuring BARRY HUMPHRIES) A worthy winner. The winner has also been my favourite artist this series.

So much to like! He has a particular strength of style - and of course he has to grown - but I thought he rather threw the baby out with the bath water on the commission. Anyway, great, great viewing

They are working on a new series of it with Toast in USA - may or may not be good. I hardly watch any TV at all, however I am watching the entire run of Montalbano on iPlayer. Right from the crazy melodramatic theme tune you know it's something a bit different. They must have employed every single Italian character actor over the age of 70 in it, not an episode goes by with out a comedy turn by an oldie in a small part, often several.

[...] The new series "Toast of Tinseltown" is being broadcast on BBC2*, so I guess they must have purchased the rights to the previous series' as part of the deal. *4 Jan at 22:00

That must be why! I'd also add, Talking Pictures TV are doing sterling work reviving the Friday Night horror movie slot. A couple of weeks ago they had the incredibly downbeat 70s Quatermass TV series followed by folk horror classic Blood on Satan's Claw and one of my all time favourite creepy films Carnival of Souls. Last week it was Vampire Circus (which is like pre-Angela Carter Angela Carter) and some luridly kitsch 70s Euro horror about Satanist landladies. They've also launched a catch-up service. And no, I don't work for them, I just love the channel!

For anyone with Eurosport Andy Murray is playing Nadal at this very moment. Exhibition sort of tournament from Abu Dhabi but still….this may not happen every again in competition!

Has anyone watched the film A Christmas No 1 on Sky Movies? Just watched it as it had Alfie Boe and Richard Fleeshman in it. Alfie Boe can't act and Richard Fleeshman is on it for about 5 minutes. As for the film itself its a pretty awful Christmas movie.

Anybody notice/know much about the 'new' Cameron Mackintosh documentary on Sky Arts on the 27th? Not sure if it's a re-run of the one surrounding Half a Sixpence opening/him reworking the songs with Styles and Drewe then flashbacks to Miss Saigon? (Which is on YouTube) Hope it's a completely new one and very good!

Agreed. If you haven't seen it, do. It will make you smile. I’m not a fan of Dame Judi but I must say her performance in this is terrific - watch how every time they tell her something surprising she pauses for a beat or even longer, totally silent, no change in expression, you’ve no idea what her reaction will be, you wait in anticipation, then she jumps back to life. It’s very skilful and calculated. It’s the best performance I’ve seen on the show since the absolutely peerless Brian Blessed episode.

Of course she can’t see anything as is obvious so perhaps listening means a bit more concentration and they might have asked her to pause for editing purposes…and yes, what a performance 😁

Laura Pitt-Pulford popped up on Emmerdale last night. Nice to see theatre stars getting some tv work too.

The Mezzotint was pretty good, though did have the rather spartan feel of something made during lockdown much earlier this year.

Enjoyed the first two episodes of Around the World in Eighty Days. Some psychological stuff ( three travellers , all with ‘baggage’ ) which I didn't expect having been brought up on the David Niven version. Tennant doing what Tennant does best. And some dramatic moments. Nothing you can’t watch with grandma or the kids.

A Very British Scandal is shaping up well, which is good because I think Christmas TV has been rather disappointing so far.

I was rather disappointed by that. Once I spotted who wrote the script, I could see why. I really disliked her Christie adaptations and will avoid completely in the future.

I'm the opposite - her adaptations are dark and often bleaker than the source material but always interesting and she's an excellent storyteller.

For example I thought The Pale Horse was very poor and the story was unclear.

I agree, they don't always hit the mark but I still think she's one of our best screenwriters.
For a far more upbeat take on Christie, Evil Under the Sun is on BBC2 at 2.50pm - perfect background telly for a cold, wet, grey winter afternoon.

The best one I’ve seen was the Suchet Poirot “After the Funeral”, quite something, genuinely startling, though theatre enthusiasts have a small head start in solving it.

Sky Arts “Play in a Day” starts tomorrow, documenting a group of recent graduates performing in a short dance piece, play, and musical all written and rehearsed in 24 hours. James Graham wrote the play and Chris Bush the musical.

BBC4 continues its Stephen Sondheim remembrance tonight with a double musical: 9pm - West Side Story 11.20pm - Into the Woods Last night was just wonderful .. my picks: Sunday in the Park with Stephen - never mind the Oxford stuff, keep watching for the first production of Into the Woods at the National: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0012txl/sondheim-at-the-bbc
I'd forgotten that Sammy Davis Jr piece ...
Bring a hanky.
Also, in a Face-to-Face interview with Bernard Levin he talks about Oscar Hammerstein's role in his life (as surrogate father to the teenage Sondheim).
