She will be. Amazing.
Betty Buckley is a Broadway legend and brings unparalleled depth and humanity to everything she does. Her monologue will be a master class.

On reflection - Buckley isn’t known for being funny is she? All of her parts have been pretty serious that draw to mind (Sunset - yes Norma can be comedic but not Dolly - Gypsy, Cats). I didn’t see Dear World and don’t know the show, is that funny? Vocally I’m not concerned, but as Dolly herself? Not so sure...

I was wondering the same, but a friend saw her in Arsenic and Old Lace with Tovah and said she was brilliant

Santino Fontana will filling in for Gavin Creel from 13th March, as Creel recovers from back surgery.
And just so happens that I am seeing the show on 13th March. Well I'm excited.

Saw this on Saturday night and I have no words for how incredible Bernadette Peters was. The emotion she bought to the role was so touching in places that the performance was elevated far and above that of Bette's, who I saw last year. There was a review that said 'Bernadette Peters descends a staircase like she invented stairs' - and watching her come down that set of stairs had me grinning from ear to ear.
Christian Dante White was on for Gavin Creel and I thought he was excellent. Charlie Stemp was brilliant and was good to see him being given extended dance numbers. There's such an energy and joy to this production that you can't help coming out of the theatre with a big smile on your face.

I was fascinated to watch in a TV interview that Charlie didn’t even audition - he was just offered the role. Same with Gavin Creel!

No. And I don't think it will. I don't think it can generate that kind of fanfare in London. It's almost the anti-Half a Six Pence. I would imagine that the reception of HSP in London cannot be matched on Broadway (despite it running on Broadway decades ago and being successful). There's something about Dolly that is quintessentially American and part of the the American heritage (as Half is quintessentially English).
With Dolly, I really think it's cultural and this kind of show does not speak to closely internationally as it does to Americans. New Yorkers have been waiting for it for many years, and this is the perfect production that celebrates its original vision but with updated production values. think the closest London got to getting a show back was the buzz that Cats generated when it reopened back in 2014 with Nicole. And that isn't even close to the carnival-like celebration that Dolly generated.
Having said this, I'll be very embarrassed if they announced a London production tomorrow.

Also, not to talk down the West End, but 'Bette Midler... in Hello, Dolly... ON BROADWAY' was such a remarkable (and marketable) feat that I think taking it to the West End is always going to be a step down. And I don't think the average man on the street would have the foggiest who Bernadette Peters is (even though I love her). Just forever thankful that I got to see Bette myself!

I agree - I doubt this will cross over. I never thought it would have and almost certain now with its closing. I'm actually surprised it's closing at all. It was doing relatively well with Bernadette. I still have two to three slots left in my visit to NY, I might go see Bernadette in it. Never seen her before and this could be her last big role for a while.

Saw it tonight and it's just as fabulous as when Bette did it. Bernadette has the audience eating out the palm of her hand. Charlie does great as Barnaby too.
About a transfer - I hate to say it but this almost feels like it is TOO good and too classy for the West End and a London audience. The Broadway audience give it endless appreciation, and I don't think it would get that here.

I've got July 21st 2pm. Orchestra Row E Seat 107. It looks like it's a bit off to the side but hopefully I won't miss any of Charlie's steps, or Bette coming down the staircase. I was crushed when I had to give up my birthday tickets to see BP and Charlie due to stupid knee surgery but this about makes up for it. I'm still thinking of trying to see BP in it before she leaves show. I live about 3 hours away and trains don't run late enough for evening show so I have to do matinee's. Trains add another (at least) $120 to cost of trip so can't justify adding cost of hotel or airbnb also.

Do you think Bette will be convinced to transfer this to the West End?

So glad I saw it with Bette last summer - this seems to stressful to get a ticket now.
I might check it out with Bernadette while it's still running.
I have major doubts it will transfer. For starters, if the Palladium is booked for its annual panto, there's barely any time for it with King & I running until the Autumn. By 2019 I would think that it would have lost the buzz it created. I honestly thought this would run and run on Broadway with multiple replacements like its original run, and somehow didn't see a West End transfer. I'm starting to rethink this and perhaps the producers would consider a 2019 run with it closing on Broadway and its other revival enterprise, Carousel, selling so so.

Surely the Palladium isn't the only venue this could go to? When is 42nd street due to finis? Drury Lane as the venue of the original London production seems an amazing voice.
Even if some of the buzz is lost, Bette Midler would be box office gold.

I believe the plan is that when 42nd Street closes, TRDL will close for extensive refurbishment so it's possible that wouldn't work!

It'll have to be either at the Palladium or Drury Lane. For such a big splash of a show, it'll need to go to a theatre with huge renown, and I think it's only the Palladium or Drury Lane that can live up to that reputation. Perhaps the Savoy or Prince Edward could qualify as well, but the latter's current patron shows no sign in bugging. The Savoy could be a good contender as I can't imagine Dreamgirls running forever, and the Savoy is very well suited for a classic. Bette Midler could take full residence in the hotel or the apartments, while we're at it.

I think the Dominion is rather classy, it's definitely a big showcase theatre. Granted in a different way to the Palladium or Drury Lane.

..one other thing occurred to me. The problem with Dolly is that, it was proven that it's truly Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly and not Hello, Dolly starring Bette Midler. Its current run is proof that it simply won't run and run without her. I'm not sure the producers would be willing to open it afresh in another country just to have it run for 9 months.

I like the word choice..I don't find it classy at all BUT a showcase theatre, for sure. I think if they just get rid of that godawful brown and the horribly depressing carpet it might work. It just needs a touch of elegance. Hand it over the Cameron Mackintosh. His theatre refurbs are gorgeous.
