Oh! What's the guarantee Griz will be played by Shirt Swinger? Personally I'd love to see Delta Goodrem take this.

Article mentions someone called Suki Waterhouse. No idea who that is but our neighbours once had a cat called Suki. They were always calling it in at night.... "Suki..... Soooki.......Sooooooooookeeeeeeeeeee"

Our rather pretentious neighbours insisted on giving all their family pets human names, presumably to make them feel they were just like brothers and sisters to the real brothers and sisters. Anyway, one particular mangy tomcat they named Wayne. Now to make matters worse, they also insisted on putting the family surname after the first name. In this case it was Carr. Like Burly's neighbours, they too had a habit of calling the thing in at night: "Wayne Carr... Wayyne Caarrr... WAYYNE CARRRR!"

I always think you should give pets people names. I'd be far more embarrassed calling "Mittens!" or "Spot!" than any people names I can think of.
With regards to a Cats movie, can we just not? Would that be alright?

I don't see the point in this. We already have the version that was filmed on the stage of the Adelphi in the 1990s, and as the show is almost completely plotless apart from the "dead cats go the ionosphere" thing I can't see how it could work as anything other than a sequence of acts presented on a stage. Unless they do it with real cats, which would be every kind of awesome.

Fabulous, but mind you, after seeing The Danish Girl recently, Tom Hooper's style is starting to disappoint me.

Our neighbours on the other side, the Hunts, were so irked by their pretentiousness, they reckoned they were going to copy them. I said, "You can't do that, Barry." "Why not?"Barry asked. Barry didn't half go red when I politely reminded him that he has christened his baby kitten Mike. Not a word of a lie...

Why cant they use real cats? There are enough talented cats on youtube and I am sure I have seen videos of singing cats before Personally I think Grumpy Cat should be Grizabella.

What??!!??!!
The Les Mis film was one big presentation of the fact that Tom Hooper does not understand the material, the artform and this way of storytelling.
And what can we expect from this? A cat sitting on a pavement, filmed in a 1 take close-up shot, speaking 4 words and vibrate for a minute on the 5th? Thinking " look at me, isn't is extra raw this way if I speak one word and vibrate on the next, don't I look like a good acting cat now"?
And there aren't any crying scenes at all in Cats to get away with that approach.
So, what the hell?
If they make it a triumph of the fantasy, what acting through song per definition is, green screens, pre-recorded music, glorious singing and dancing, they need the opposite of Tom Hooper.
And even if he learned something from the Les Mis travesy, and it will be a triumph of the fantasy somehow, with cgi cats singing for example, he is still too tempted to have hollywood-non-singers attempting "live speaking and vibrating on certain notes" to butcher the music.
But seriously, what is the point if the director does not understand that amazing singing can not be amazing acting?

I'm having quite the time visualising a vibrating cat, "vibrate" and "vibrato" are rather different things!

Cats... Moggies... Pussies... Call them what you will. We don't want them vibrated or otherwise by the said Tom Hooper. Agreed?

Maybe they'll use CG in the same way The Jungle Book did but TBH Cats is so theatrical, it would be tricky to pull it off without making look ridiculous

I hear this on the radio this morning. I can only reiterate what Michael and The Matthew have already stated. Why? I appreciate Lloyd Webbers desire to have all his shows filmed however why not film Sunset instead?

Sunset's issue is that the film rights are owned by Paramount Pictures so ALW has to go through them to get permission and they're not interested at the moment

Don't think this will work. It's such a stage centric piece, of which the choreography is essential to this medium. Would just get lost on the screen.

The whole language of telling a story through song is meant to be a triumph of the fantasy. Therefore a literal approach turns out silly (Les mis) because this artform is per definition not literal. So I think if they use a lot of green screens and create some kind of triumph of the fantasy (like fantasia) it could work, although I'm not sure how to do that with Cats yet, as it is just a compilation of separate scenes of cats presenting themselves.

I hope they'll use real cats. That reminds me of an episode when I was working for a major record company. We were approached by a film producer who had an idea to make a film based on 'Romeo and Juliet' but using live cats. I did a deal licensing film synchronisation rights for one of our recordings of the complete score of Prokofiev's 'Romeo and Juliet' for quite a sizeable sum of money and a few months later the producer got in touch to say he would like to show us some of his advance filming. I got together a number of the senior company executives for what we expected to be a rather unusual experience and we settled down to watch the filmed material. Well, it was all totally meaningless – just a lot of cats walking around aimlessly. This went on, and on, and on..... and my colleagues gradually sneaked away out of the darkened room. Eventually the room was just about empty but the cats were still walking around on the screen to Prokofiev's music. I don't know whether or not the film was supposed to have dialogue overdubbed but what we saw was lacking any speech and seemed to be total rubbish. Needless to say nothing further was heard of the project and the record company made a tidy profit out of the deal, as did the conductor of the recording with whom we shared the fee. On the basis of that, I would not recommend filming ALW's 'Cats' with real moggies, pussies or any other kind of felines!

The existing film was a recording of the show on stage (performed with the touring set at The Adelphi, IIRC). The new film appears to be a move away from the stage, in the same way as other stage-to-film adaptations have been made. I have no idea how that could ever work, and I suspect that The Emoji Movie may end up looking not so bad in comparison.
