To premiere on Netflix in December 2022 Bit of a long wait, but I'm sure it'll fly by. I am really excited and nervous to see how this will work on screen as the stage show is so theatrical.

I think the plan for a while now has been for a Cinema release in the UK and on Netflix in other countries.

I think the plan for a while now has been for a Cinema release in the UK and on Netflix in other countries. I've got a feeling it's playing UK cinemas exclusively for 3 weeks and then dropping on Netflix on 23rd Dec. So, similar to other Netflix films which get a cinema release (usually awards contenders) but usually only in select cinemas, I think Matilda will get a full-blown roll out nationwide.

Netflix has to release the film in a certain amount of cinemas to be eligible for the Oscars. CODA played in my local cinema just after it was released on Apple TV which obviously went on to win Best Picture this year.

IIRC Sony has UK distribution so it'll be a cinema release here but Netflix overseas.

I'm really happy with that trailer but also the fact it's British!!! I don't mind the 1996 film but this feels more like the book tonally.

Not having seen the show (I know, sigh. mia culpa- hangs his head in shame) I have the cast recording so am familiar with the songs but I agree, this looks terrific!

This trailer looks fabulous - very excited to see the final version as I have high hopes as a fan of Matthew Warchus, Chris Nightingale and Tim Minchin's various efforts over the years!

Surprised that RSC don't have skin in the game on this film - can't see them in any of the credits so far. Would have thought they might welcome the income.

I'm surprised how unimaginative this looks tbh. The cinematography looks pretty dull.

Also wondering what the new material we are hearing is? The spelling of Matilda…. Interesting.
The tone looks right … warchus knows what he’s doing!

It looks OK but the trailer didn't excite me to be honest. I'll catch it on Netflix but probably won't rush to cinema to see it

I just think it’s a real shame that none of the original cast will be in the film. Some of that may be due to actors not wanting to revisit it in film form, but I do know that not all of them were asked or even invited to audition.

Lauren Ward is just too old to play Miss Honey now to be honest, especially on film. They couldn’t have Bertie Carvel because I guess they decided the part of Miss Trunchbull being done “in drag” on film wouldn’t really work like it does on stage. The two who played the parents would have the same issue as Lauren Ward I’d think; they’d look too old to have a child of 5-7 years old. The only person from the original main cast who could probably still play the same role would be Mrs Phelps, was that Melanie La Barrie originally?

The poster looks so poor in my opinion .. yet the trailer seems intriguing(:, the musical songs are enjoyable so I’m sure I’ll watch

Yes, Melanie La Barrie was the original Ms Phelps ( she’s shortly off to Broadway with &Juliet I think). I take your point about ages, but respectfully disagree. The whole story is a fantasy so I’m not sure that in all the roles, that would have mattered. My kids never seem to notice people’s ages if they’re engrossed in a film or TV show. Wasn’t there some talk of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Trunchbull at one point? Personally I don’t see the problem of this role being played in drag on film, but maybe that’s just me? Changing the subject completely, I really didn’t love the bit in the trailer where the kids are all dressed up in glittery jackets. It reminded me of Everybody’s Talking about Jamie, which to me most definitely didn’t work as a movie. I hope Matilda isn’t going to follow suit.

It's likely because Sony has the screen rights so they couldn't have the RSC involved as producer but I imagine they'll get royalties given it's based on the stage musical. Matilda already has a previous book to film adaptation so the jump from stage to film isn't going to be as strange compared to other shows.

I had completely forgot that Stephen Graham was in this! He is one of my favorite actors so it's making me look forward to this even more.
This being one of my favorite musicals, I'm not completely blown away by the trailer but I'm sure I'll still love it regardless.
I wish Bertie had been cast as Trunchbull as he is hands down the best to ever play the role but I'm sure Emma will still ace it.
