I think we have sunk to new lows when papers are reporting on who the non winners of a baking show might or might not be “dating”.

Sandi Toksvig has quit then.
Not much of a loss as far as I’m concerned. Deeply unfunny and lacking in warmth. Now can we get rid of Pru too please? Delia Smith would be good!

I didn't mind Sandi, though I agree she wasn't the right foil for Noel - not sure who would be.
The Junior Bake Off team of Pru and Liam judging and Harry Hill presenting was really good this year. Harry was so off the wall with the kids he got them all giving bemused smiles whenever he turned up at their benches, but it kind of worked. Liam as a judge for the kids was brilliant - he was constructive and encouraging, without crushing their confidence.

Yeah, GBBO forgot the magic formula for judges is one nice one who connects with and empathises with the contestants, and one “mean” judge who gives the proper criticism. Prue is often harsher than Paul so they don’t play well off each other.

Also, Pru isn’t a cook. She’s in the food business. Restaurants, columns, cookery schools, tv judging. That’s the charm of Mary Berry, she comes across as being a home cook first and foremost.
How about ditching Noel and having Liam and Tom Allen do it with Paul H and Delia.

Welcome to the Fielding and Lucas Show.
It will be those two acting the goat and thinking it’s funny.

It's been getting less and less about the actual baking, this just seems a continuation of that trend.

They’ve been in a “bubble” over the filming period apparently. Not sure how that works given that it’s usually filmed at weekends and contestants go home in the week and practice for the following weekend’s challenges. If they have been in confinement this could be very interesting.
Matt Lucas.... meh. Having said that he couldn’t be less funny than the queen of not funny, Sandy Toksvig

I was surprised to see Matt tasting with Paul and Prue... I don't remember Sandy or Noel doing that.

If they have been in confinement this could be very interesting. Apparently they were locked down together: "The Observer reports the contestants had to quarantine for nine days with the 130 people involved with the show tested three times before filming. After that, everyone involved lived together for a six week period whilst the competition was underway." I think one of the contestants mentioned in the intro something about not seeing her husband for 7 weeks.

Presumably because they have everyone there full-time they can film more than one episode per week, instead of only filming on weekends. They must have paid for the contestants’ time off work.

Two days on,two days off was the filming schedule.
10 episodes over 38 days then plus the pre-filmimg isolation.
47 days in total so 7 weeks sounds right.
Pretty intense and not a lot of time to rehearse your bakes

Good start that, right from Matt Lucas Johnson impression. Good mix of contestants, Prue's double entendre's and cakes being thrown on the floor.

That was a lot of falling cake.
I do like that Matt likes cake and looks like it. Much better variety in the contestants this year too.

I am expecting a lower standard of baking this year - they really don't have much time to prepare for each episode given that they only have 2 days in between (and I am guessing only limited access to kitchen facilities - certainly not their home kitchens and equipment)
It is inevitable that we will get less polished work - certainly in terms of design/finish. And very possibly in technique as well - as they just won't have time to perfect things
I was not impressed by their cake construction skills. Knowing how to stack cakes safely is not a difficult skill to acquire - and certainly something they should have thought about considering they know what week 1 involved.

We might know one finalist - or it might be that they are all being kept together for the entire filming process so that everyone is back for the finale (as family and friends are unlikely to have been permitted)
