Since we are waiting for Rent Live to be on our screens, I can't help but flash back to this incredible production, and the incredible cast we had the opportunity to watch. In particular Philippa, Ryan and Ross, who were all just incredible and, in my opinion, completely reinvented their roles. What a show! Previous versions I'd seen (sorry @emicardiff!) had always come across false to me for some reason. It never felt real or raw like it should do. But that production, it made everything just so real and honest.

You may wish to avoid Rent Live - just finished here in the States - and it was (1) not live - the actor playing Roger broke his foot so they showed the dress rehearsal up to the very end (2) some very poor performances - albeit some good ones (3) very strange edits to the book and libretto - hard to understand the rationale (4) an audience who reacted to singing and not the show. But, your views may vary.

It helped he’d never seen it before directing it as well. I’ll save the essay here but there was an element of Rent being “enshrined” in the original production but Bruce’s version was one of the few to throw that out and do it well.
