Has this discounted at all in Brighton? Been looking at tickets for Manchester as the husband wants to go (he's never seen it before) and there are loads of seats left but they're not particularly cheap even with my ATG card

ATG should be ashamed of the prices they’re charging at The Theatre Royal in Brighton.
I hadn’t been there in years but went to see Rocky before Xmas and was shocked at the state of the public areas in the place. It’s unbelievably shabby and run down. The less said about the state of the non-functioning women’s toilets the better. Such a shame to see a once grand and beautiful building left to get into that state.
As for the show, I’m not sure what to say. The last production I saw of it was in its original home in the Kings Road, so that was about 100 years ago.
My daughter is a big fan and has seen many subsequent productions over the years though.
The standard of the current production is very low rent. I get that it’s supposed to be kitsch/tacky to an extent, but this looked like a very cheap children’s show.
I have no idea what the thinking was with the costumes for the tiny ensemble, all wearing non-descript black outfits and the ill fitting garb on several of the leads wasn’t much better.
To me, the whole cast looked pained and like they were just trying to do their best to get through the show and avoid getting tangled up in the slash curtain. There was no real sense of fun or brio in any of the performances ( even Stephen Webb who was merely a serviceable Frank with an inexplicable wavering American accent). At one point Rocky was carrying him and came very close to dropping him ( he had to knee him in the back to keep hold of him).
The audience interaction seemed to have strayed quite a way from what I understand from my daughter is the usual super-fan stuff. A LOT of swearing, most of it aimed at Dom Joly, which completely legitimised it for me ( the most enjoyable part of the evening for all the wrong reasons along with Riff Raff &Magenta rendered completely invisible by over enthusiastic use of dry ice).
I would say that they need to get a resident director in there as soon as possible to sort out such a perfunctory effort from the cast and ATG need to put some of their billions into restoring the Theatre Royal to its former glory.

Saw this in Liverpool Empire 15+ years ago and had a marvellous day getting lairy on cider (underage) before going into the theatre in full Frank getup. Don't remember much about the production but the overall occasion stays in my head so must have made an impression.
Returned to this last night in Manchester Opera House, which magically managed to fill 70% of its seats 24 hours before the performance (in the same way Bat Out of Hell did on its opening night in MCR). Visually I knew what to expect having seen the 40th Anniversary simulcast on TV but the set looked ever cheaper and tired. It was obviously well rehearsed as they rattled through the production at an incredible speed -2 hours including the interval! - but seemed a very shallow presentation. Brad & Janet very Glee with Brad's nasal singing a bit arduous to sit through. Frank was ok but his wavering accents were needless and terrible. Rocky's acrobatics were good. Riff Raff the mainstay of the production. Dr Scott/Eddie played by some kid who mustn't be more than 20 was terrible. Out of breath for the entirety of Hot Patootie and the worst dropped voice for Dr Scott going, akin to a GCSE Drama performance. Liz Macdonald as Narrator obviously jumped in for a dress rehearsal that afternoon, heavily reliant on her script and didn't seem to have a clue what was going on. During the curtain call she just stood there side stage right look at everyone else, not knowing what to do. She tried to join in on the Time Warp but didn't know the moves... Who over 35 who hasn't been to a cheesy disco in the 90s doest know the Macarena and the Time Warp? Cringeworthy.
Anyone who's not seen this show would have been so confused as to what was going on in the second act due to the velocity at which they treated the show. Band sounded ok. Lights need refocusing so they're not illuminating the rigging in various parts of the stage and house.
I think they've milked this show for all its worth now and its really showing. It needs to go to bed for good few years and come back re-energised, re-produced and re-directed.

Completely agree with squidward post above. The prices at Brighton Theatre Royal are ridiculous and as Brighton resident I rarely go. I refuse to pay top prices for some tatty tour. I did not see this particular production (because of the prices) but friends told me it was dreadful. Next Christmas season they have Pricilla to overprice and under deliver. Panto days are long over - why? Brighton just gets a 3 week residency now of a touring musical - most of them not even festive! Yes, despite paying a "restoration levy" on tickets for YEARS there has been no investment or even maintenance of the building. It is VERY shabby. It needs a closing and a complete refurbishment! Shame on ATG!

I'm going to see this with my Mam on Thursday and even though I think I know the answer she wants to know if any of the "traditions" still happen. Rice throwing, fancy dress? I have no idea I'm just her 20 year old daughter asking.

Really enjoyed this at Wimbledon last Saturday. "Charming Underclothes" were out in force, but some of the responses were seemingly coming from one woman in the sound desk area. Plenty of energy, Dom Joly a quick-witted narrator and Ms Clifton was pretty good - better singer than I thought. Will blog more some time, but it is worth catching. I think I was at the same show. It was my first time seeing it and I really enjoyed it.

Oh dear, that can be the problem with Rocky Horror. I have seen it many times over the years and because audience interaction is not only encouraged but kinda mandatory, a lot of audience members out for a good time tend the think this means the rules of normal theatre etiquette no longer apply. Respond and heckle with all the correct phrases at the right time sure, but its a fine line that is so often crossed. Glad Laura has called them out, and she is no doubt in the right, but does she have a leg to stand on? Some audience members I've sat next to have been more horrific than anything on stage, but can you really tell someone off at Rocky horror? Its a case of be careful what you wish for im afraid, anything goes.
Also I agree completely that some of the responses are often not from the audience. I seem to think they pause to see if anyone shouts it, and if not they shout it themselves!

Theres a difference between overboard audience participation, heckles etc and audience taking selfies mid-show. I believe anyone on stage subject to the latter would be firmly within their right to call them out for. At least drunken heckles show they're watching and paying attention. Taking a selfie, means they're stuck in the vaccum of their own reality paying attention to themselves only - and people like that need to burn.

Trouble with this show is it’s stuck in a time-warp...

Saw the show this week in Birmingham and must admit that Alison Hammond was a scream as the Narrator. As it was a weekday night there were slightly less blokes in fishnets and the audience participation wasn't as vocal as when the hardcore fans tend to go on Friday and Saturday nights.
But when Alison was coming up to the "Heavy Black and Pendulous" line several people shouted out "Describe your t**s" which totally cracked her up.

It will be Ben Adams's last week as Brad Majors on Saturday - James Darch will be taking over from Monday in Eastbourne.
Although it's not been officially announced on the website, Stephen Webb posted on twitter that he'll be Frank for the Malvern dates.
I got a little over-excited about going to the late show on Saturday and have booked for the early evening show as well!

Stephen had been linked with returning - would Duncan coming in be classed as "stunt casting". He is good in the role though.

Yes, sorry I wasn't clear - I meant that although Duncan & Stephen have both already been officially announced as Frank for most of the tour locations, there are some where it still hasn't been officially announced. Malvern is one of those gaps, and Stephen's implied on twitter that he'll be in the role for that location. I've probably made that even more complicated now... sorry if I'm driving anyone insa-a-a-a-ane

Has anyone else read about the religious fanatics protesting about the tone of the show outside the Storyhouse Theatre in Chester. There has been the cast doing the timewarp in front of the protesters, a gay couple kissing in front of them and someone even mocked up quotes from the show onto the protesters' placards on social media.

I've been following this on social media as an ex-Cestrian and it seems to have generated quite a lot of news there. This religious group has been pulling the same trick for years, they once told me I was going to hell for seeing a show in the old theatre there.

What are they protesting about? The homosexuality? The debauchness? It feels a little late in the day to try and sway public opinion against a show that has been around for decades! (btw, I voted remain but I LOVE your username! I admire people that put it out there)

Hhhhhmmmmmm. It’s weird that non of their placards actually say anything about the show. There are lots of things they could of said but it’s very very generalised. It’s almost as if it’s a publicity stunt???!?

I must admit I hadn't heard of this theatre before on a lot of the regional tours we see listed. I'd imagine getting the Rocky Horror Show would be quite a coup for this theatre.
I wonder what reaction the protesters got if they were there last night and tonight when the real hardcore RHS fans tend to turn up in all their finery.

If you look at the “protesters” placards they don’t mention the bible, god, rocky horror show, gays, bi’s, trans, transvestites, sleeping around, theatre or anything other than non offensive waffle. They r either the most polite and dull of protesters or someone wanted some publicity but decided they shouldn’t offend ANYONE.
I don’t buy it. Look how professional all the placards are. It reeks of fake ness
