I hate James . He is too perfect. Anything he can't do. Return to Broadway soon James!
Don't be one of the theatre 'history boys'

This doesn't seem to be an unpopular opinion, so I don't feel bad saying it. I can't stand him. He's changed over the years and I just don't like him anymore.

Likewise, while I'm pleased for his success and he's done really well for himself, I wouldn't rush to see him in anything.

With the one exception being the Paul McCartney carpool karaoke thing, he is rather intolerable.

A lot of people dislike him.
The weird thing is that they'll dislike him while still grudgingly admitting that they like some of his stuff! I've literally seen on Twitter people complaining that they saw something awesome because he tweeted about it, and saying they'd have to find another source to re-tweet it from, or that they like the bits from his show but wish he wasn't in them.
It's bizarre. It's like he has anti-charisma.

He's fine in character with a good director. One Man, Two Guv'nors showed him at his best. Hit or miss at best when doing his own stuff.

The only thing I've seen him live in was One Man, Two Guv's, and he was great. But other than that, I can't name anything I thought he was that good in. He was fine in Into the Woods if anything. I don't think he is very funny or interesting on his Talk Show though. He just comes across these days as arrogant and like he has completely changed from why people liked him in the first place.

That's the thing though- he hasn't at all. His schtick is pretty much the same as it always was.
I guess familiarity breeds contempt?

He's kind of a Ricky Gervais figure for me; I concede that he's talented, but it's a crying shame that he knows it, and the things that he's involved with are always better when he's not immediately on screen/stage.

I know for a lot of people, his constant talking over - and singing over - people on carpool karaoke made them dislike him.
Personally I don’t mind him: he’s harmless and entertaining and I get a laugh usually out of whatever I see him in. I wish he’d return to theatre as I don’t believe there’s many comedic roles for older men and I think he’ll struggle to in a dramatic roles.
I’d like him to prove me wrong though.

He needs to get a couple of Godber's under his belt, then we'll see how good an actor he is! 🙂

I rather like him. Thought 1 man 2 guvnor's was the funniest play I have seen and liked him as Smithy. I dont really watch his TV show but have seen the musicals he does on zebra crossings which are hilarious. There is something about the British though in that they much prefer people to fail than succeed.

Particularly when said person doesn't look like they should be successful/doesn't fit people's mental image of success. A lot of people appear to think that he just shouldn't be as successful as he is, even while admitting that some of the stuff he does is good.

Makes my skin crawl! Just about tolerable in Into the Woods but my God that smug face of his really does wind me up! His only talent is being a gobsh*te

I used to quite like him, even to the extent of reading his autobiography and he is certainly talented. But I think in today's media saturated world he has just become too ubiquitous and what can be charming in small doses becomes grating the more you see of it; he overdoes the 'lad' aspect I think.

His interviewing skills are worse than dreadful, but I have to admit I do find some of the sketches on his show amusing and he can give some very funny anecdotes when he really knows one of his guests (Dominic Cooper for example). Carpool Karaoke was a genius idea but I want to hear the guests, not him!
Never seen him on stage so I won't judge that aspect of his work, but I thought his opening number when he hosted the Tonys a couple of years ago was decent.

I assume it'd be a commercial production rather than a NT production.

Not an admirer. The only thing I saw him in where I actually liked him was Doctor Who. I don't understand how he has a career, and now that restaurant business in Manhattan has reinforced how obnoxious and arrogant he comes off. I won't watch a film if he's in it, and I've only seen two or three bits of Crosswalk the Musical on YouTube because of the other guests. I suppose he's one of those Marmite personalities, although I honestly can't think of anyone I know who loves him.

I like him and have actually met him briefly.
I respect everyone's now opinions but personally don't understand the negativity towards him.

I find it fascinating how some celebrities manage to acquire such a bad reputation. I suspect a lot of it is largely undeserved.
The fact is we've all had our run-ins with atrocious customer service, and on stressful days, we might lose our cool. That's fine as a nobody, but once you're famous, there'll always be some bitter employee seeking revenge, or an onlooker all too happy to invade your privacy, film the whole she-bang, and shop you to the tabloids.
As for dealing with all the endless requests from Joe Public for autographs and selfies and who want to be your bestie, I don't know how they stand it.
I know if I were famous, I'd be just like Cilla, ignoring everyone and getting my hubby to deal with them. I can't be doing with sycophants, and sorting those from genuinely nice people must become quite exhausting.

The problem is there’s barely a person in British telly (or I suspect other areas) who’s not got a James Cordon horror story. You can’t be a diva and throw screaming tantrums on every single show you work on and not get a reputation.

I've never seen him (either on stage or TV) in anything other than One Man Two Guvnors. I went into that with quite a negative view of him based on comments I'd heard but I thought that entirely separately from the play he had a genuinely charismatic stage presence. It is very rare, very few performers I've seen have had it, Peter O'Toole was one.
