Rocky Horror (hate this, I don't understand why it's popular with anyone except goth kids) I did see Rocky Horror when I was a teen and it was just fine. But I didn't really get into The Whole Thing. Then I watched it again a few years ago and honestly, if it didn't have this enormous cult following, then it would be coming perilously close to just not standing up anymore. There's some really dubious scenes, consent-wise, and I think the messages of sexual liberation are ridiculously tame when viewed through a twenty-first century lens. Yeah I'm a fun-sponge, but if they took it away for a decade or two, then I don't think it would ever make it back. The thing I dislike about Rocky Horror, aside from all those valid points above, is if you declare it's not your bag, you're classed as a total 'fun sponge' but also a 'total square' like that's the only way to be liberated/progressive, when as you rightly point out, it's not all that progressive actually.

Musically-speaking, I also think that nothing apart from Timewarp (as it's now a party standard in its own right, I remember it at school discos) is any good in the score. Kookiness for kookiness's sake, along with those t-shirts that say things like "People scare me! XD"

It was so diddle-dai-diddle-dai Irish that I half expected them to Riverdance at the end Oh hell yes - a really great cast, and started so promisingly but then bunged in every cliche with half an eye on Broadway and the sort of people who have giclee prints of John Wayne in The Quiet Man on their wall. Towards the end I thought, no, they're not going to actually have a banshee are they oh god they did. With characters coming on and doing their little turns, it felt more like a kitsch musical without the songs. Maybe they should rework it? The cow gum song, old granny reminisces etc. Now THAT I would pay to see.

*tiptoes in* MADE IN DAGENHAM was dire. *tiptoes out* The audience steadfastly refusing to "Stand Up" despite repeated pleading from the cast was a damn site funnier than the actual onstage antics. I've never seen a cast read an audience so wrong, surely they had factored in some backup if the punters refused to stand but no, no they hadnt and poor old former Bond Girl Gemma Arterton looked daft making the gestures to a stoney faced crowd.

‘The Producers’ at Drury Lane; endless mugging and it just thought it was a lot cleverer than it was.

One of the Showstopper shows I saw last week I didn't enjoy that much, although it did have some amusing moments. I think it was because it ended up being about LGBTQ rights in 1960s America & that's not a subject I'm interested in. The rest of the audience gave it a standing ovation. However that's improv: some you love, some you don't.

Cheating slightly as it's a play not a musical but Hand to God. All that hype and I just didn't get it.

I'm glad the cast ignored that suggestion otherwise it'd have been money wasted. It did however turn into a rather pedestrian Welsh Nightclub setting which hadn't much appeal to me either.

On the other hand (no pun intended) - and I only saw the NT Live transmission so maybe not the full effect, but I really didn't like Hangman.

OK, deep breath .....
Billy Elliot (I loathe politics being rammed down my throat) Sweet Charity (so bored, to my shame I fell asleep!) Little Shop of Horrors (what on earth was that all about?) Company (agree with other people's views) Blood Brothers (hated adults playing the kids)
I'm sure there will be more if I can dredge them from the depths of my memory!

I've learnt not to write off settings immediately as some that didn't sound that promising - Walthamstow market, an office party - have yielded great shows. I find how much I enjoy them depends very much on if I can care about the characters & their problems & relationships or not. longinthetooth I had a similar problem with Billy Elliot. I also hated all the kids swearing so much & only really liked 2 songs in the whole show. I only saw it a 2nd time because I really wanted to see a Mrs Wilkinson alt. who I'd seen in other shows.

Erm... I don’t think it was the intention that the audience had to *literally* stand up at all... Just like when they talk of the barricade in Les Mis, they don’t actually expect the audience to smash up their seats and pile them on top of each other.

My list is easy: THE BOOK OF MORMON first and WICKED second! I didn't get much out of MATILDA either but I think that was due to very poor sound where I was sitting.

Dear Evan Hansen WITHOUT Ben Platt. Noah Galvin had just taken over the part and didn’t cut it at all. To me that exposed the somewhat thin quality of the actual show/mostly forgettable songs. Massive standing O from the rest of the audience at the end.
Kinky Boots - Completely unmoved by this and disappointed with the on the nose script, forgettable music and unimaginative choreography. The audience went crazy with joy at the finale.
Sunny Afternoon - Script so badly on the nose it might as well have been credited to Wikipedia. Songs fine, but I’d rather have listened to a CD of The Kinks performing them in my own living room. Everyone in the audience was up on their feet dancing ( cajoled by the cast to do so, which I found supremely annoying) except for us.

For me it was Mamma Mia. I remain convinced that it was actually Am Dram but with a bigger budget than they normally get.

For what it's worth, I really enjoyed that one, but I've never seen the Showstoppers do an LGBTQ one before except the odd gay affair so it might have been a novelty. The ones set in Ancient Rome / Greece / Egypt have me getting ready for a sleep before they've even started

I didn't like Matilda very much, but it was more the frustration at watching Tim Minchin's biting satire be delivered with no comedic timing by a bunch of 7 year olds.
Young Frankenstein and Spamalot were both about 5% as funny as the rest of the audience seemed to think they were. Unfortunately for both I was sat in the front row so had to pretend to be finding it equally as funny as everyone else.
Going to rock the boat here and say that School of Rock is actually my favourite Lloyd-Webber show. The plot is nonsense but it's great fun and it's the only show I've ever seen with kids in where I haven't wanted to strangle them all.

Yes I agree with Cats, only saw it once , just to say I have seen it. Part of seeing it was to see Nicole Scherzinger too!

Yes I agree with Cats, only saw it once , just to say I have seen it. Part of seeing it was to see Nicole Scherzinger too! The success of Cats, for me, was the original staging. I saw it when it originally opened and again at the Palladium. The first was amazing. I managed not to walk out of the second by nodding off.
