To be honest, I think Jean Valjean is a very bad example to pick of a male role to be taken by a trans man.
All the trans men I know are small and slight (and in their twenties). I can picture them in roles like Rolfe in The Sound of Music, Evan Hansen, Mr Mistoffelees, potentially Fiyero or one of the men in Legally Blonde. But as a man who can lift a cart with his bare hands and wade through sewers for miles carrying a younger man when well into his sixties? I'm really struggling to picture it. Maybe if I knew an older trans man build like the proverbial brick building I'd feel differently, but the fact that trans men will follow the average height/build curve for females does make them playing a physically imposing role against cis men much harder. I wouldn't choose cast a 5'4" narrow-across-the-shoulders cis man as Valjean either, although you might get away with it in a concert setting.
I also think trans men would have major problems with vocal changes (not many men can play Valjean, let alone if you've been a soprano until your mid-twenties and have to re-train your voice completely to a new range), and if they're binding then singing and dancing will be much harder.

Didn’t think about the vocal requirement. A trans person does not fit in with the profile of the JVJ, it wouldn’t work. People have to believe in the character and if the audience doesn’t, you won’t sell tickets, it would be a laughing stock. Everyone Talking About Jamie it would be perfect. And this comment, ladies and gentlemen, is a prime example of the insensitivity and discrimination faced by those who are trans Unbelievable. And this comment ‘Ladies and gentlemen,’ I see you didn’t include anyone who may be trans, so a prime example of insensitivity and discrimination faced by those who are trans and those who identify as being non-binary. Unbelievable.

There’s a time limit on editing posts to stop people going “back in time” and changing things they said. However doesn’t work on the mobile version of the site. Blame Proboards for that, not the moderators.

Is that why I could delete a post once and have never been able to again? Mystery solved if so!
(I wasn't wanting to delete for nefarious reasons, I'd mucked up quoting and couldn't work out how to solve it on the mobile site because you don't get the code version in the same way as you can on the desktop site.)

Has anyone seen or planning to see the latest tour? Quite keen to hear about it as it seems to have been given the Hairspray tour treatment and stripped right down to its bare bones.
The website seems to be a bit of a mess as well, no proper cast list and quite a lot of dates and venues missing from the booking page. The website is only selling tickets for English and one Welsh date. No Irish or Scottish dates seem to be available despite it being billed as a UK Tour.

I'll be volunteering for it at the Derngate in Northampton at the beginning of August so can report back then unless anyone else is going sooner.
Normally it's such a fantastic show but I am worried if it's been cheapened this time and lost its sparkle.

Even a bad production of Priscilla will still be a lot of fun. According to the website, Joe McFadden isn't playing Mitzi anymore, it's showing as Edwin Ray now. I missed that news!

I thought Joe McFadden was badly miscast. Its not a great production but can only be better without him.

Happy to say this was better than I'd feared - yes they've saved a few quid on the sets and costumes but it's still a boatload of fun and the performances help elevate it. Edwin Ray is better as Tick than Joe McFadden would've been, and Miles Western (Bernadette) and Nick Hayes (Felicia) are both superb. The Divas sound great too. And you can't beat that medley finale for ending on a high.
It's also been some years since I've seen it so this may be old news, but the tour uses the Broadway opening of 'It's Raining Men' as opposed to 'Downtown'.

I don't know why but this just felt...icky to me.
It looked like it had all been made for £7.99 and a few binliners for starters. I expected it to look cheap though, but it really was as bad as I feared. I've seen some pretty low-rent pantos with better costumes than this. Also didn't think a single one of the leads was a good singer (or a good actor for that matter). Tick looked lost and like he was from an am dram production, Bernadette just...wasnt very good (but I guess when you've seen Tony Sheldon do it no one will look good) and Felicia seemed unable to stay in one key. Divas were great though, and I did quite like how all the lockers turned into the bus. Bus didn't look as awful as it might.
General public lapped it up, loved it, shouted out, sang along. Can't say fairer than that. Although I do wish more people wear masks. Obviously understand if there is a reason you can't but 'i don't want to' doesn't cut it with me. It's not that much of an imposition for 2 hours to make it a safer experience for all concerned (that's my Covid 2 pence).
2 stars from me, for a show that I gave 4 when I originally saw it at the Palace. Material has aged and not in a great way. Score still lands every single song though.
Absolutely just my view though, like I said public loved it. And it's the kind of show we need to get people back in...I just didn't think the production itself was up to much.

Travel zoo have 40% off all prices next week in Birmingham Tickets prices full price are outrageous for such a budget production ..... my local amateur company even had full size rotating bus and flying divas ! Superb sets and voices tickets were £15 !

Saw this last night, it's a crowd pleaser without ever straying outside it's comfort zone.
Some strange staging choices - particularly sticking the leads on the top of the back wall for the finale or never actually hinting that the outback is an desert (the part of Australia being played by a sheet of corrugated tin for the entire show).
Cast and tunes worth the effort, I thought - it's a good 'welcome back to going out' show.

Priscilla is one of my guilty pleasures, seen numerous productions of it and have enjoyed nearly all of them. We caught this on Friday night at Curve and yes it isn't anywhere near as good as the original production but it still is a fun evening out.
There is just one thing that always annoys me in the show and that is the reaction to the F*ck off Fag*gots" scene. It winds me up so much that most of the time it gets a laugh from a few people in the audience. We have only ever seen one production where it was met with gasps and then silence and that was the production at the Queens theatre in Hornchurch. However, bloody heck the reaction it got on Friday night was disgusting, the amount of people laughing and one woman on the row in front of me actually started applauding it! It just REALLY didn't sit right with me. It might be me being precious, or "woke" as the kids say nowadays but it has definitely made me think if I want to carry on seeing the show.......

I COMPLETELY agree with you on that scene. I volunteered twice for it in Northampton last month, and both nights that graffiti reveal got prolonged laughter from the audience. One woman giggled for a good couple of minutes. I do wonder what world we live in where so many people still find that slur funny. They're happy to be entertained by a show about gay people, itself created by many gay people, but will also happily laugh when those same gay people are victimised in that way. I too worried that I was overreacting so I'm glad you felt the same.

I half expected that same response but, much to my surprise, there was no laughter and a decent amount of gasping at the Cliffs. Same for the assault in the bar later on.

Jesus, I can’t believe people are reacting like that! I saw the first UK tour in Manchester and that scene shut every single person in the audience up. The following scene actually had quite a profound effect on me as a 19 year old gay man trying to fit into the world.
