I suppose they haven't animated/added them yet.

I suppose they haven't animated/added them yet. Ot maybe they didn’t use the special cameras that show up all of our daemons. Mine’s an otter.

It looks like Clarke Peters is playing Morgan Freeman!!
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a very left field choice for Lee Scorsby, maybe because Sam Elliott played him so perfectly in the film. I feel like he was cast largely on his name alone.

There' a trailer out for this now. It doesn't give much away, though the Lyra actress does look very like Ruth Wilson, and Lin-Manuel Miranda seems to be channeling Indiana Jones. More modern-looking, less steampunk than the film, maybe?
Btw, I find Pullman's concept that your 'spirit animal' can shapeshift throughout childhood but then becomes fixed permanently at puberty depressing and conservative (like an animal 11-plus dictating your future)- I wonder how that element will play to this generation where fluidity through life is even more prized?

I am trying not to build my hopes up too much for this. I love the original novels and the stage adaptation (and adore the audiobook of La Belle Sauvage - best listen ever)
So I just hope it works. Was nice to see New College Chapel in one shot

cant be any worse than the film which was a mess! I liked the casting and look of the film. I'm not really a fan of the books - it's great to see high fantasy on TV/film but the books themselves are a bit all over the place, though with some good set pieces. It'll be interesting to see if Jack Thorne has made something more coherent out of them.

Long trailer out for this today, for Comic Con. The production design looks great, but I'm still not sure about the casting for this - I thought the movie was near-perfect in that respect.

Would agree with that. Lyra looks quite good but I'm not yet convinced on the others. Probably need to get the film out of our mind. All those subtitles going over the action is quite distracting as well.

All those subtitles going over the action is quite distracting as well. If you go to the Youtube version (follow link or google it) it's in widescreen with the option to turn captions off - click the CC button on the lower right hand side.

I loved the armoured bear. That was impressive.
I still don't buy the Asriel or Coulter casting. They don't fit my view of them.
And as for the Golden Monkey.... Just looks too cartoon-y. I know it is realistic but it doesn't look it.
Am still excited to see it

Yes, though they'd better get a move on shooting the rest of the series!

Lin-Manuel Miranda's speaking voice is a real problem.

As another though, I was at the RSC Measure for Measure on Saturday and couldn't stop thinking that Sandy Grierson would be excellent as the priest who does the preemptive penance and goes through the window to find Lyra.

Who's Andrew Scott playing? Will Parry's father in the second book, going by Twitter. It looks like they're filming series 2 now.

Apart from liking McAvoy and Duff and being insanely in love with Ruth Wilson I'm also pleased to see some other of the other cast - Clarke Peters, Ruta Gedimenta, James Cosmo, Ian Gelder.

It’s a funny one isn’t it. So many people love these books and have their own idea of what people look like. To me Mrs Coulter always looked like a young Patricia Hodge.

YES! I can totally see that. She was in an old Morse I was watching the other day, and had very Mrs Coultery vibes now I think about it.
And blonde. She is BLONDE.
I love Andrew Scott, I think he's fantastic. But John Parry is a bluff, rugged, outoorsy, cheerful type, with an undercurrent of determination that would do nasty things if he needed to. I just can't see Andrew Scott being that. He's too... indoorsy.

I've just seen Anne Marie Duff is Ma Costa! That's another one that seems really odd to me. Ma Costa is a big comfy fat woman, more like Mrs Patmore in Downton.

Didn't know they were already filming the second book, good news! The third one's alternately pretty bleak and a little far out for long spells, wonder if they're going to do a straight adaptation or mix it up a bit.
Andrew Scott will be fine, just give him a bit of stubble and a scruffy old hat.

Another new trailer just released - looks promising, and due in Autumn rather than Christmas.

Yes - if 8 episodes, that takes us up to Christmas. They've just announced that a BBC co-production of Terry Pratchett's The Watch (Sam Vimes and co) is about to start filming, though the original team who were hoping to do it a few years ago, including Pratchett's daughter, don't seem to be involved. It's being filmed in South Africa, which is a surprise - I wonder if that will happen more with Brexit? There was talk that Brexit was behind Scotland 'losing out' to New Zealand for the Amazon Lord of the Rings but given the huge budget I think New Zealand was probably always going to be the favoured location. A lot of fantasy/period series have been filmed in Eastern Europe, though as American money is generally behind them maybe the pound/Euro rates won't have that big an impact.

Not HDM, but the trailer for War of the Worlds is finally out: it was due last winter but I think special effects stuff held it back. It was filmed locally and they're actually doing it in the correct period so I'm looking forward to it, though I wish they'd got a more exciting male lead than Rafe Spall.

It's not the correct period. They've moved it from late Victorian to Edwardian. Not sure why - perhaps they wanted to put in some Edwardian technology? Looks quite good though.
