Apparently Fireworks (Katy Perry) and Bad Romance (Gaga) was added to the score. I'm not sure how Fireworks is shoehorned in but I can't easily imagine Bad Romance to heighten the tension between the two leads.

Both of those sound like tremendously bad ideas but good luck to them!

They both, to me, undermine the potential romanticism of the piece. Shame.

I feel they could use some unoriginal music and some original music.

@matildawormwood : There wasn't a song called Kissing you in the movie... Also Come What May was an original song written for the movie and is being included along with some of the pop songs also included.

Fascinating Fact Alert - Come What May was actually written to be used in Romeo & Juliet but Baz decided against it and instead it was included in Moulin Rouge. That's why it was deemed ineligible for the Oscar as technically it wasn't 'original' in Moulin Rouge 😁 but I agree that Kissing You would fit waaaaay more beautifully than either Katy Perry or Gaga.

It's easy to say that, but do we even know what scenes or context those songs would be used in? It's hard to conceive it now, but there would have been a time when the entire Moulin Rouge soundtrack would have sounded preposterous taken out of context. There's no reason to immediately assume these new songs would be a terrible addition without first finding out what they plan to do with them and how.

There's no reason to immediately assume these new songs would be a terrible addition without first finding out what they plan to do with them and how. Exactly, it's about context. Lyrically every single one of those original songs fits perfectly in terms of the story and what those characters are doing/feeling at that time. There's nothing in the lyrics of Firework or Bad Romance that have anything to do with the story as it currently stands.

So surely it would follow that the story as it currently stands isn't going to be 100% what they're putting on stage, and we should wait and see what they plan to do with these new songs and how?

In terms of context, Bad Romance is very similar to the Elephant Medley but with a different tone. Both of them tend to say that this is a bad idea. Elephant Medley is a love duet that uses ballads, while Bad Romance is fully pop, but fundamentally they could be the same.

Yes indeed. I'm happy to proved wrong. It's feeling a bit "if it ain't broke...." to me, but let's see what they do

Seeing this show on the 5th of July and absolutely can't wait. I adore the film.
Thought I'd throw in some gossip as well. Based on some of the cast's InstaStories, I was able to discern a snippet of the song Everlasting Love (sung by Love Affair among others) - I assume it's going to be a part of the Elephant Love Medley now? I also heard bits of Rihanna's Only Girl In The World. Don't know how that's going to fit in, but at least (some of) the lyrics sound like something Satine could sing. And the arrangement sounded cool.
And I'm pretty sure Bad Romance is going to be a duet between Nini (Robyn Hurder) and Santiago (Ricky Rojas) based on Instagram posts from the workshop which took place last December. I suppose it could provide some character development before Roxanne happens. Can't wait to find out next month.

Check out Max Clayton's instastories and you'll hear what I think is The Only Girl In The World. I follow the ensemble too. And seeing as I had a lot of free time on my hands over the last few weeks, no story on insta went unseen... Don't remember who posted a clip of Everlasting Love though, and it's most definitely gone by now.

Oh how awful. I'm glad no-one was hurt but if Aaron Tveit needs someone to check him all over just in case.

Thanks for thinking about me, though! For partly selfish reasons, I must admit... I’m relying on your review as I’m keeping everything crossed this comes over to the U.K. soon!

I have to laugh or I would cry. Just finding out about the new dates - I booked flight and hotel (all paid and non refundable) for my summer holiday - yes - with ticket for Moulin Rouge for 8th July - two days before previews now start. I have to keep telling myself that in the grand scheme of live, this is not a biggie...but still a bummer.

I have to keep telling myself that in the grand scheme of live, this is not a biggie...but still a bummer. I feel your pain... I originally booked for the 5th. Was meant to leave Boston on the 9th, but somehow managed to re-book the tickets for the new first preview. So now I'm trying to sort out a new departure date and accommodation. What a nightmare. Still, happy I'm going to see it.
