What a lovely article. I'm about to start the fateful chapter of Jonathan's death in the Anthony Rapp book.

Live Cast Recording is set to come out Feb 1st.
To me, the OBC will always be the best recording of Rent, I hope this recording does justice to the score.

RENT is finally coming back to Spain (in Spanish, not in Catalan like last time). I hope it tours; if not, not a problem, I can get to Barcelona in 1.5 hours.
I know nothing about this cast. It's too white tho. The recent UK tour production is a tough act to follow, but hey, I'm glad I get the chance to see the show live again.

Any idea if this is being shown here in the UK or how I can watch it online (lawfully)?

Who knows if this applies to international viewers, but: www.elitedaily.com/p/heres-how-to-watch-rent-so-you-can-refresh-your-memory-before-rent-live-15828783"Once you've prepared all of your witty Rent-themed puns for your delayed viewing party, you can likely find the broadcast afterwards on Hulu. After those with live TV access on Hulu streamed its first run, last year's NBC Easter special Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert became available on the service and is still there to watch today. There has yet to be confirmation of Rent: Live hitting Hulu immediately after it airs, but another possible outcome is that the production will appear on the FOX website."

In a shameless act of self promotion...I've got an article in Slate today about this slate.com/culture/2019/01/rent-live-fox-tv-queer-representation-history.htmlAnd in a purely sentimental angle, damn if this broadcast and writing this and another piece hasn't got me terribly sentimental. It's hard to put into words what Rent means to me (and if you hate it, feel free to scroll on by and not tell me I'm wrong for that). And I've waited a long time to have somewhere like 'Slate' say 'yeah we want you to give us the words on it'

And I've waited a long time to have somewhere like 'Slate' say 'yeah we want you to give us the words on it' Thank you for this! Similar thoughts ran through my mind last time I saw the show, which was a concert version at Adelphi University on Long Island. MJ Rodriguez reprised the role of Angel, which I found fascinating considering her history with the show (I'm not entirely sure of the correct phrasing, but when she did the role off-Broadway, it was with a previous name and different gender). I'm glad subsequent productions of the show have left it in the late '80s/early '90s, when they could've just gingerly been vague about it just by using the clues of Benny's huge cellphone, the common use of AZT, and bluntly calling Angel a drag queen. I'll be interested to see what Rent Live does.

Ooh, exciting! I hope that's not everyone though. It would be awesome if Idina, Daphne and Fredi could be there too for a full original cast reunion!

Yes! I’m so excited for the OBC! Time to relive the summer of 1997 when I’m a unrepentant renthead on Sunday.

What are people's expectations for Valentina?
I think I would have liked to see Indya Moore from Pose, whether she can sing or not like Valentina I am unsure.

I must admit I got a little emotional just seeing those tweets this morning. I don't care about not seeing the whole thing right away but please oh please Fox please release that finale (I'm assuming that's what they're doing) All of them. Even Idina. God damnit.
Also can we have a moment of respect for my friend, who watched Rent for the first time last night, then had coffee with me, the day before this is happening. If that boy didn't get Rent history chapter and verse...

People who watched the dress rehearsal are saying that Valentina's Angel is... well... horrible.

Brennin Hunt, who plays Roger, rolled his ankle at last nights dress rehearsal but is still planning on going on tonight. The article makes it seem like they restaged some parts to make it easier on him. Brennin Hunt's Rolled Ankle

This is terrible. And Valentina should be ashamed of herself for that performance.

I saw a video of an audience member and they are actually performing the show at the same time with Brennin on a wheelchair. I don't understand, are they switching to live footage in the scenes that do not include him, or only the finale is going to be live? It must have been hard for everyone but I wish they would postpone it or something. Even though I strongly dislike the cast, you can tell that a lot of people have been working for this and this is not the result they were aiming for.

If this teaches any of us a lesson, go full out in the dress rehearsal! Thank God Vanessa showed up when she did to save this trainwreck.

Wait, so it ended up not being live? Can someone confirm?

I've not seen it, but everyone online says it was all recorded up to where Brennin broke his ankle (off stage after What You Own), then it was live after that.

Sounds like a bit of a mess - but one of my favourite musicals so interested in seeing it!
Does anyone know if this will be released on DVD?
Failing that is there a link to somewhere I could watch it?
Thanks.

Just watched back Valentina’s Today 4 U, she reallllly kept it to speak-singing which in all honesty was mostly just speaking. It wasn’t horrendous for those parts although it seemed to lack any actual acting, nothing phenomenal but there’s worse out there, the last note took it down a LOT though. What a mess.

Can't wait for a legal way to watch this over here. I for one am really glad that Jordan Fisher seems to be getting a lot of praise on social media... I really love him as a performer and he was great in a supporting role in Grease Live. I'm also a fan of Vanessa Hudgens, of course, and I'm hearing good things about her too.
I've also just seen that there'll be an album out too, which is nice to know.

There are some good voices - but also some awful actors.
Roger looks so much older than Mark - which makes their shared history rather unbelievable.
But it all feels a bit too confected to me. The staging lacks any grit - it is actor-types pretending to be down on their luck. There is no authenticity.
And don't get me started on the audience. Just awful.
I just wonder what they thought they were aiming for with this project. It doesn't serve the original well. It doesn't bring anything new to it.

Just watched the clip of the OBC on YouTube - such nostalgia!
Hearing such awful reviews of the rest that I'll probably just watch the clips Fox have put up of Vanessa Hudgens and Brandon Victor Dixon and leave it at that. I have the DVD of the last show on Broadway to watch instead!
