Employment Opportunity
The White House is in urgent need of someone to follow the President around and pick up the toys he keeps throwing out of his pram. This is a full time position of 40 hours per week with a further 16 hours on call at weekends. Prior experience of working with toddlers, the mentally impaired or bovine excrement will be an advantage, as will the ability to play dumb so as not to embarrass the poor dear.
Salary: $200 / hour. You'll earn it.
Benefits: None, because America.
Availability for immediate start is essential.
People with foreign-sounding names need not apply.
Not enough hours is it? Twenty four hour position this, Trump is tweeting through the night. Shared position this one

Turns out the very generous person who sent me several birthday presents had sensibly included Christmas with them, in my excitement I missed that and opened them all.

I really can't work out what the Trump campaign is up to. Do they think if they make enough of a fuss Trump will have to be president no matter what the votes say? Are they trying to create civil unrest to destroy the country on the basis of "If we can't have it no one can"? Has Trump led such a privileged life that he simply can't accept that it's possible to legitimately not get everything he wants (but if so why is his campaign backing him up in that delusion)?
Republicans in general have started to weird me out something chronic. It wasn't like this in the Bush years, but for the last decade there seems to be no limit to what "liberals" are apparently capable of when it comes to batsh*t insane conspiracies. Where did the right-wing sanity go?

Where did the right-wing sanity go? Yes. Seriously, though, there were always two options with this crew: 1. No actual plan, making to up as they went along to satisfy the whims of the narcissist-in-chief 2. Long term plan of a fascist takeover of America via packing the courts so that election results can be overturned, democracy undermined, and Trump turned into a dictator for life like the hard-man autocrats he so admires. No-one actually knows which of them is happening, it’s possible that some in the administration want 2 but are actually hindered by 1 also being true.

The Matthew, I keep wondering the same thing, but - based on his strange behaviour - I think I've more or less concluded he is simply a terrible loser and an unstable person. I see no other explanation for this that would make even the slightest bit of sense. (Why nobody within his team pulls the occasional emergency brake is beyond me too.) But it is truly unsettling how the elections have highlighted such an enormous polarisation of the US electorate, that has made civil unrest a possibility, and even a feared probability. Whoever does win the coveted seat in the end will have a lot to think about and (hopefully) address.

I'm hoping for another day when it looks like no further declarations.... then Penn and Georgia both come in together. On Tucker Carlson's Fox News shift

True but I will be sad on 25 when I have nothing to open, maybe that means I can buy myself a present?! Yes! :) Not only that you can, but you absolutely should. (Disclaimer: I love presents, and I simply love buying them for others, but am still learning to buy them for myself without feeling guilty somehow for being self-indulgent. However, this year I will be spending both my birthday and Christmas in London, away from family and friends - even the London ones, probably, because, lockdown and virus and all that persistent nonsense... - which probably means no presents, so it's a lesson I will have to learn too. We got this Peggs! ;) ) Also, happy birthday? :) On a different note, I don't know how and why, but I found myself texting Headlong today, intrigued by their Ghost Caller campaign. And I loved it so much! (I also cried my eyes out while trying to work... Be careful with it if you've lost someone you really miss...) Encouraged by this, I bought a last-minute ticket to and just finished watching Crave from the Chichester Festival Theatre. And while I loved the staging and the acting, and thought the text to be clever and witty, my mind kept wandering... At one point I started thinking about how gripping it probably would have been if I was inside an actual auditorium. But somehow on screen, as much as I liked it, it didn't quite reach me.

I really can't work out what the Trump campaign is up to. Trump's agenda is a hissy fit - scorched earth. Poisoned well. Saving face. So, Kathryn's #1. Now, the Republican party... they're playing the long game, so Kathryn's #2. I don't think they're consciously trying for fascism, but they definitely want control of the courts so they can structure society to their liking, "for our own good". They want the country the way it used to be, when it was automatic that educated, well-off, old white men would be in charge. In a way, it's a collapse of Empire, although "empire" in our case doesn't mean overseas territories/influence, but the domestic power structure. The part I don't get is how so many blue-collar workers think that the Republicans will use them as anything other than cannon fodder. I look forward to seeing the plays that will come over time with perspective and insight into what's going on!

Still wouldn't surprise me if a drop of legal challenges is exchanged for a pardon I think a lot of potential charges against him are in state courts, so nothing a federal pardon could forestall. And Biden can't pardon him until he's president, so Trump would have to drop litigation now and trust him to hold to his word. (Which he would probably do.) But damn, I'd hate to see him off the hook for any of his misdeeds. At least Nixon had the grace when confronted with the inevitable, to do the right thing and resign. Although, I wonder if it would be possible for Trump to resign now, Pence steps in, pardons Trump and acts as a placeholder until the inauguration?

Trump currently has 1 million more voters than the Obama landslide of 2008, and way more than Obama in 2012.
I find, again, I'm so glad to have seen Sweat by Lynn Nottage.

Apparently there's a press conference at 16:30. For some reason it's at a garden centre. Nobody can figure out why, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we're going to see the president sitting in a sandpit building his own White House because nobody else will play with him.
It's a measure of how much support he's lost among the sane and rational that even Republicans are telling him to stop being a brat about it. Some TV stations didn't even bother to show all of his last press conference.

I have to admit, part of me wants to see Trump being escorted out of the WH by U.S. Secret Service or U.S. Marshall’s. He doesn’t deserve a decent send off to his Presidency.

Remind me, when does the next presidency begin? 20th January 2021, 12pm EST. Yet another reason to want to wish 2020 goodbye! Even 3 more months of the deranged buffoon is a terrifying thought, but at least sanity will reign and finally, finally a woman (and even more importantly a woman of colour) will be VP!

Never have I seen so many non americans invested in an american election, the relief all over social media is palpable. For the last 3 mornings I have woken early to check the news and periodically after that, tensing at what I might see. 2020 just gets stranger and stranger.

He can only be pardoned if he has been convicted of a crime.
To be pardoned he would have to confess, be charged and found guilty.
Additionally pardons only cover Federal crimes, the State ones like the one in New York would continue unabated.
‘If he has committed crimes’ his future looks like one of infinite legal fees without the protection of Office.

Actually presidents can pardon people for a crime that has not even been indicted never mind convicted. Nixon wasn't charged with anything when Ford gave him a pardon for anything he might have done whilst in office...

To which Nixon could have said 'I don't want/need a pardon' but he didn't. And so Nixon and his erstwhile Vice President achieved the desirable outcome.
It's all been a constant reminded that the USA constitutional system of government was an experiment that got out of hand, and never got changed - and why none of the 100+ countries that have come into being since has wanted to follow that route.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next four years see some restrictions put on what the president is permitted to do. The president is supposed to be a temporary benevolent dictator, and I don't think it ever occurred to those who established the system that the position might be held by someone who saw it purely as an ego trip with no regard for the long term consequences for the country as a whole.
Anyway, I guess we now have to get ready for the inevitable memoirs, in which Trump will claim to be the the greatest of all presidents brought low by the evil conspiracies of jealous liberals who were unable to cope with his genius and strong leadership. I'm sure he won't be able to resist the desire to tell of his struggle.

I'm guessing they'll be plenty of tv stations etc eager to give him a platform since it would be pretty much guaranteed ratings though yes you'd know exactly what you'd get.
