I can't wait to see how they get around the rake in that theatre on roller boots. They're more likely to need mountain boots and a rope. I hope no one turning up is expecting to see any roller skates 🙄

Back to Starlight - this is high on my list for a school production but apparently health and safety won't allow it! I loved the local youth production I saw a year or so ago (Centrestage in Eastleigh). First time I ever saw it with actual racing too as I only saw it on tour not in London. I also loved how some of the cast were near the front to catch anyone who got too close to falling into the orchestra pit! It did make me wonder why they can't race on tour...

Glad to see more bold programming in this venue for new musicals... I'm sure ALW would never have found anywhere else to support his brave, experimental piece without the visionary programming of The Other Palace. Alongside such up and coming talents like Alan Menken and Frank Wildhorn, it's great to see a fledgling writer getting the support this venue has declared it wants to provide. Theres a fair point to be made here. Could it be that the UK musical market has Webber-fever with a hefty portion of his back catalogue running co-currently. Jeeves opening in the lakes soon, JCS just re-opened, sistering Evita, School of Rock and Phantom in London, Sunset about to embark a huge UK tour, a movie of Joseph in production and The Woman in White and Starlight heading for small remounted/'workshop'-type presentation. There is potential for debate here; Is ALW getting his moneys worth whilst he still has chance or (devils advocate) with the threat of Hamilton and Dear Evan-esque shows stealing the limelight could it be he's saturating the market to prevent more up and coming writers getting new work out there?

There is no question that ALW and Cameron stifled the competition during the 90s- using advertizing spending power to bend the print media to their will.
It's ironic when they ALW now bewails the lack of a new generation of writers.
Oh and yes, the sands of time are definitely running out.

Who would we like to see in the cast? It'd be nice to see Ray Shell as Poppa again. I'd love for Cleve September to get a crack at Rusty.

ALW has been vocal about the lack of anything new coming up in the UK - and he credits School of Rock's "Grammercy Concerts" as one of the things that helped cement it to become the hit that it is, so I'm not shocked that he's taking this opportunity to revisit something that was a huge international hit, but that if it has any future, would need some re-imagination to be sure.
As for the resurgence of ALW's stuff, I'm thrilled! I only wish Aspects was somewhere in the queue for a new revival. Part of this is that ALW had said recently he hasn't any ideas for a new show - so this is a way to occupy his time and perhaps get the creative juices flowing for something new. And the reality with him coming close to turning 70, I'm sure he's hoping to have his works as "definitive" as he can as he gets older
I am curious though, wasn't there a Joseph revival coming this year for the 50th anniversary of the show?

Ditto. Been an ALW fan for years and my favourite of his two shows are the slightly odd pairing of Starlight and Aspects. So excited about him trying out some new things for Starlight (though frankly if they put on an exact replica of any of the previous incarnations I'd still be there) and would be ecstatic if it came back to London on a more permanent basis (much as I love my annual trips to Bochum, it's getting very expensive). Aspects of Love I think contains some of ALW's most beautiful melodies and I listen to the whole show almost in a semi trance. Lucky enough to have seen all 4 versions (Trevor Nunn's original, Gale Edwards tour, Nikolai Foster's tour and the Menier version) and really enjoyed all of them. Would love to see it reimagined for the West End. I fear however that as a classic 80s sung through musical and without the spectacle of Cats or Starlight there wouldn't be a commercial market for this now though. Miss Saigon's sales falling off within the first year (and failure to find a NEW audience - nearly everyone there had amazing memories of seeing it before) a refection of changing tastes I think. Joseph rumours been around a while. The Lord wants Liam Payne apparently. Elton John's film version also permanently on verge of happening but never does. Cats animated film too.

They just need to bring back Liebessexpress(Engine of Love), Lotta Locomotion and Only You back into the show aswell as updating a few roles and maybe adding Belle back into it. If they turn it into a rapping "Hamilton" meets "In the Heights" fusion thinking this is what modern day society represents I SHALL SCREAM!!

Such a pointless mindless waste of everybody's time, money and energy. There are not new depths to be plumbed in this show. It does not need a stripped back feel. It does not need workshopping further. It unfortunately feels like a cynical vanity exercise from somebody biding their time until they come up with some new ideas. Imho

could it be he's saturating the market to prevent more up and coming writers getting new work out there? Because buying a London theatre to turn into a place where new musical writers can experiment is the best way possible to execute that particular plan? no question that ALW and Cameron stifled the competition during the 90s No they didn't. Theatre was going through some very tough times, and theirs were the few shows that kept things ticking over until better times arrived and others could afford to produce once again. Theatre in London is once more in a hard place and reliable banker shows are again being used. Nothing more. I was working there and I saw it happening on a number of occasions. Look at 1995 to 1996, for examples. Theatremonkey, I didn't realize you were such an acolyte.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar last night and it made me think - they aren't changing the characters, music or plot in that. Why fix it if it's been so successful for decades? As someone said above perhaps after all it really is vanity...

As someone said above perhaps after all it really is vanity... How would you change the plot? Have Jesus get a last-minute reprieve? Seriously though, ALW tinkered with very few shows - Evita, Phantom or Cats have changed very little since they first opened. Starlight Express has been fiddled with several times - from London via Broadway to Bochum, the big overhaul in the early 90s, the constant changes in the German version and so on... Why? Good question...

Good question... Actually mr sarcastic there are many ways they could change Evita or JCS by adding new characters, expanding others, cutting songs, adding new ones. My point is that some shows seem to be rock set in stone. Others are played around with for decades and in my opinion they don't need to be.

I'm so tempted but can't do the Saturday matinee and not sure about the trek up on a Wednesday. If only they'd added a Sunday matinee!
