I was meant to see MW this week, but had to reschedule to next month. At least it should be well & truly settled in by then.

I saw this twice last week while on holiday in Australia, and I loved it. The way they’ve combined the new music with the ABBA songs works really well. A week later many of the new songs are firmly stuck in my head - I wasn’t familiar with the composers before, but I loved what they’ve done with it. I was a bit dubious beforehand about the story being updated to the present day, but it totally made sense when I saw it. The cast are excellent - and what an impressive debut from Maggie McKenna. It deserves to have a long life beyond Sydney, and I hope it makes it over to the UK at some point. Definitely see it if you have the chance - I left with a huge smile on my face and promptly rebooked for the next day.

I saw this last night. It's a lot of fun! Loud, brash, extremely colourful and very Australian. Maggie McKenna ( Muriel) has a huge voice and is so comfortable in the part you would never know it was her professional debut. She is very much like her mother ( Gina Riley) in both voice and looks. Bringing the story into the present day works wonderfully well, with plenty of clever jabs at social media & celebrity worked into the original songs written by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. Anyone familiar with Miller-Heidke's previous works will recognise her quirky turn of phrase and catchy melodies. It's pretty much sold out it's run in Sydney, and the only other place the STC plan on taking it is Toronto,Canada. I'm not sure how well it will translate for non-Australian audiences, they may need to have subtitles explaining! Except of course the ABBA scenes. Everyone understands ABBA. As they say, ABBA are forever!

I'm not sure how well it will translate for non-Australian audiences, they may need to have subtitles explaining! I’m not Australian, but I don’t think I missed too much and I seemed to be laughing in the same places as the rest of the audience, so I reckon it would translate well to the UK with a few minor changes. I did have to google Alan Jones afterwards as that reference was lost on me, for example. And I still don’t know if the fleeting reference to a wedding shop in Chatswood got a laugh because Chatswood itself is amusing in some way or if it was just the comedy Swedish pronunciation of it (or both)! Good to see that there will be a cast recording too.

The pros arch is actually covered in giant pink frangipani blossoms (plumeria for the Americans )

Interesting article in the Guardian which takes issue with plot changes from the film to the musical - URL in spoilers as it explains what it doesn't like so the URL is a spoiler in itself!

This was meant to be playing a season in Toronto starting today, but there were issues and it has been postponed for a year. I thought Toronto a strange choice, but there you go. (Nothing against Toronto but wouldn't be the city that springs to mind when one says 'musicals'!) There's a return season in Sydney starting next June ie 2019, which is already booking. I have read that theatre availability is the reason this hasn't toured outside of Sydney. Meanwhile, you can purchase the OCR at the link. murielsweddingthemusical.com/

I've been listening to the cast album and absolutely love it. I really hope this ends up in London, I think it would do very well.
The (short) trailer looks great

Just announced this is getting a brief run in Melbourne before it's return to Sydney next year. Playing from March to June at Her Majesty's Theatre.
No word on new cast as yet. (Maggie McKenna has moved on to US tour of Dear Evan Hansen.)

Thanks! A great insight, just wish we had a bit of show footage! Wonder if this would be allowed to open in London with Mamma Mia still running though, since Abba songs are used throughout.I
