The role of Charlie's Mother must be alot more substansial in this production considering, judging by the photos of the curtain call, it appears she gets to bow after the Golden Ticket Winners and their parents, and just before Grandpa Joe, Charlie and Wonka.

I wonder if Charlie's dead father gets a bow...

My expectations for the London production were sky high having heard so much raving about the set and the music and I left disappointed by both. I suspect this will be no different

I could cry that no one has got this show right. Mary Poppins was glorious, even Chitty was fun. Charlie has just been a disaster it seems on both sides of the pond.

Whilst UK Charlie didn't please some critics, playing to a relatively full house for 4 years in Londons biggest theatre is hardly a disaster.

The show was good in London. The production was right (for me!) and I am a fan of the Film and Book. But the Broadway production looks like a disaster in the making. At least, with the London run, it ran 4 years, and it done good business throughout.

Whilst UK Charlie didn't please some critics, playing to a relatively full house for 4 years in Londons biggest theatre is hardly a disaster. I didn't say the show wasn't successful. Four years is great. That said being "good" isn't good enough for such a beguiling story that millions hold close to their hearts. It truly is one of the best films from my childhood. The stage show ran for such a long time because of its name not because the show was extraordinary. The set was mostly great, new music pants, not including the original songs bad, plot/book odd and magic none existent. I don't wish the show to do badly as I have friends in the Broadway production (and I've seen all the new sets) but doubt this new version over the pond will last very long.

My parents are trying to book this if we end up going to America in the summer and I'm doing all I can to stop them after what I've read on here😂 Praying we can go to Miss Saigon instead

So the Facebook page has blocked reviews from being posted about the show. Before they removed them I had seen a number of reviews complaining about the set. Now this could just be because it's in previews but I haven't seen any other show do this. Groundhog Day is still in previews and they are letting people review their show on Facebook

This is sort of related and I just found it today but at least if this flops Christian Borle has something to fall back on.

I feel like they have just gotten really lazy? Like you can get away with not having an era/coubtry to be based in, if you have decent set/costume/lighting/projection. Similarly you can get away wih a minimalistic set if your costumes/lighting/projection/songs stand out and the actors use the space to their advantage. But from what I have seen (not a lot!), it really feels like they've just gone 'its fine, the name will sell it' and not put the effort in..

From that picture Id guess to entire production budget to be about £50. Ive seen better set on amateur stages.

Blimey... Looks like an excellent amdram production, but as a Broadway show, asking Broadway prices, what the hell happened? The London set got a bit of flack but that is something else!

What is wrong with taking the set from London and the musical numbers from New York, have them make a baby and that can be the show?

The London set was great. They will be making a huge mistake if they take this set on the UK tour...

If that's the door to Wonka's factory, it looks like a Porta-Loo.

It's like they're not even trying to hide how the Oompa Loompa's work!
I really hope the tour doesn't use this set either, but the problem with London set was that it was absolutely huge and there would be no way the Drury Lane set could tour, unless they scaled it down enormously. So maybe the Broadway production has just been designed with that in mind...

I think the only thing on the designers mind when doing this was budget. just look close up how cheaply constructed the piece looks. http://instagram.com/p/BSndx4clOOM

No that can't seriously be a Broadway set??? That's atrocious!! And I never even saw Charlie when it was in London! I've seen better sets at Upstairs at the Gatehouse, the Union & Southwark Playhouse!
