Saw it last night and LOVED it. I had no issues with the sound at all.. I thought the cast sounded glorious and the band good too. Stand outs for me were Rebecca T- her voice truly is remarkable. Unlike anyone else's I know. I could have listened to her sing Bill 5 times over. Chris Peluso- handsome and with a great voice. Really wish I'd seen him instead of Vibrato Brammer in Saigon now. And best of all .. Gina Beck. Wow. Stunning acting performance and a glorious voice. She better be on the Olivier nominations list next year or I will be most unhappy. This production NEEDS to have a cast recording My word, mrb, you are surprising me more and more... Were you aware that you can listen to Rebecca Trehearn sing Bill over and over on Youtube? Beautifully filmed, half black and white, half colour, and sounding lushhhh!

I saw this again last night (3rd time - once in Sheff and once in London). Still adore it but agree about the sound. I found it difficult to hear some of the words during ensemble songs and Captain Andy was virtually impossible to make out. I didn't buy a programme this time but I am sure the ensemble was smaller than normal? Unless they have simply left the show. I only saw it in April though. Anyway, I still loved it. Joe sounded a little tired to me but everyone else was wonderful. I much prefer Chris to Michael Xavier (runs and hides) and Rebecca Trehearn is the best thing in it for me. 'Bill' is the best part of the show. Love it. Determined to go and see it again before it ends! The ensemble was smaller, 2 of the guys were out ill/injured and the only swing who could cover those roles was also out ill. 2 of the ensemble were basically doing their own track and another - kudos to them as I don't think first time watchers would even notice! Though it's a shame that Old Man River does lose its impact slightly compared to a full ensemble - nevertheless still amazing!

Would be nice if they toured this show next year but can't see it happening.

This show is sensational.
J K Rowling thingy needs to come and see this then dare tell the cast is it less than "theatre" or any straight play.
It is theatre at its best. What a ghastly woman!! Boycot that new Harry Potter play - that's hardly a Boris Godunov or a Greek tragedy!

I saw Showboat a couple of weeks ago and thought it was done very well, considering the rather bizarre nature of the story that is told throughout this musical. The score sees this show through, with lesser songs I feel like the random storyline would fail. I couldn't fault the cast and I enjoyed the intimate feel of the staging but I couldn't help feeling slightly disappointed that each of the characters stories were never fully explored and even concluded adequately. That's a criticism of the musical as a piece rather than this specific production. Thankfully the man who played Gaylord was excellent and very dishy so that cheered me up a bit.

Saw this Wednesday matinee and thought it was terrific. Rebecca was off, but I was wowed by Gina Beck and loved loved loved Chris Peluso. Got the great half price matinee deal. And a lovely audience too.

Saw this last night and enjoyed it although it felt a bit small scale in terms of cast numbers. "Old Man River" was sung by Joe and five other guys with a couple of ladies dropping in to add their voices. It was underpowered and, hence, not the showstopper it should be. On the up side, we had the understudy Joe, Tosh Wanogho-Maud, who possesses a rich bass-baritone voice and who nailed the song's low notes, something, I gather, that the regular Joe has a problem with.
Gina Beck was the star of the show and quite perfect in every way and I also liked Chris Peluso's Ravenal. His voice and hers were a great blend and I thought he handled his underwritten role extremely well. Btw, I loved the way the ending was staged, that problematic reunion scene. Director Daniel Evans got it exactly right.
Rebecca Trehearn was out and her understudy was not able to infuse "Bill" with the required magic, which was disappointing, but the rest of the main cast were certainly impressive. I loved Sandra Marvin's Queenie and Malcolm Sinclair's Captain Andy - talk about making the most of your part!
Act Two is always going to be a problem but Evans's solutions seemed appropriate. The time compression after the Trocadero scene was inventively done although one wished he had had more resources at his disposal. In the last Broadway incarnation of this show, the Hal Prince production, the passing years were indicated via a massive dance number, the music and the dance steps changing with the times from the sedate cakewalk to the hot jazz of the twenties. But every staging of Showboat is going to be different in this section of the show.
This is a fine production of a great, if somewhat troublesome, musical. Well done to all concerned.

It's not a good recording.. Obviously recorded live. A studio receding would be good

I suppose it must have been done to use as background audio on the promo videos. Which might mean Ol' Man River exists somewhere, too.

I kind of have to agree with you about Old Man River - with Tosh on as Joe the ensemble was one short as another member is still out injured. Previously the impact at the end of Old Man River with a full ensemble has been very powerful with Tosh adding some strong vocals which I really missed when he was on as Joe (As Joe his Old Man River was amazing to watch and listen to... a very emotional performance from him!)

Seeing this for the first time ever tonight! I don't know how to feel about it in all honesty. I rarely see shows I have no knowlage what-so-ever of so I am excited but apprehensive too haha. Literally my knowlage of this show is Gina Beck, Ol' Man River and that it has race issues... oh, and that it is set on a boat. Haha

Thank you, I must admit, the main draw for me is Gina Beck at the moment, she is my most seen Glinda so I want to see her do something new. Hopefully the show lives up to the hype people on here have been giving it!

I did have one question, as I haven't really been keeping up with this thread as I actually did want a surprise going into it. What kind of genre is it? Comedy? Drama? Simply one of those "boop-boop-de-doop" musicals?

Groundbreaking musical written in 1927, about travelling players on board a Paddle Steamer - the Showboat of the title and deals with the racism of the time. It still has the power to shock, and is incredibly moving in parts. A splendid revival. Enjoy. Take some tissues!

Not the best start, an old woman just fell down the stairs in the stalls and bashed her shoulder against the stage. Poor thing.
