I did end up seeing this in Oxford - you're bang on, Danielle is excellent but Tom is quite poor. He doesn't act at all and just about manages with the vocals but isn't particularly strong. The girl playing Rizzo (can't remember her name, sorry) acts well but needs a bit more oomf in her voice. Ensemble are brilliant though, particularly the T-Birds - Kenickie and Doody are particularly notable for their amazing vocals. The show is pure cheese, with choreography to match, but that's kinda what I expected from Grease. I'm glad I saw it as it was really good fun and did actually have moments where the show was very strong, but I wouldn't hurry back unless someone good was cast as Danny.

How was Danielle's 'Hopelessly Devoted' and 'Sandra Dee reprise?'

How was Danielle's 'Hopelessly Devoted' and 'Sandra Dee reprise?' Both really good - I knew she was a good belter after seeing her as Eponine, but she showed off a really beautiful and controlled head voice in Hopelessly Devoted. Some solid acting in Sandra Dee reprise, clearly trying to bring the best interpretation out of the slightly dodgy 'I'm going to change myself so the boy likes me' plot, plus a nice 'let it rip' moment towards the end. My only comparison here is the movie, so if you've seen the stage version a lot you may have a different opinion, but I thought she was really excellent.

Found a video of the cast performing Summer Nights on Blue Peter; Danielle sounds great as Sandy, I would actually like to see her in the role. Tom sounds so weak in comparison. Tom's mouth is saying "wonder what she's doing now" but his face is saying "wonder what's for dinner tonight"

Okay so Grease, hmm. Had a super fun evening, it's a show that goes way back for me that I performed in as a child (a very short-lived career I hasten to add!) so it was really nice to see it on stage again.
However, what on earth was the Casting Director thinking?! Tom Whatshisface from Generic Boyband #426 was just terrible. Absolutely terrible. Could barely sing, could not act and definitely couldn't dance. So so disappointed in him. Entirely outshone by the chap playing Kenickie, who should without a doubt have been Danny.
Louisa Lytton wasn't much better either to be honest. Her acting was passable but her singing weak, with many of her notes cut short. She actually sounded a little poorly so maybe she isn't well.
Danielle Hope I thought was brilliant. Really shone as Sandy. I think she contributed to making the weaker cast members look weaker by virtue of being so strong herself. Her Sandra Dee Reprise and Hopelessly Devoted were both quite sublime. Hope she goes on to bigger and better things.
The supporting cast were great, full of energy and clearly enjoying themselves.
Three star show, four star evening, helped by the fact that I went in actively wanting to enjoy myself.

Pretty much agree with everything you said Daniel, I was there tonight too. I did think Danielle struggled a bit to make an emotional connection but I blame that on her opposite number. There was very little chemistry between the two. Bump up Michael from cover Danny and we might have a halfway decent show.

Who's meant to be taking over from Darren Day as Teen Angel do we know? He finishes this week. I know Gary Lamont does Glasgow but that's his only venue

I see Gabriella Williams went on as Sandy this week - she was the standout for me as Patty when I went in Manchester. Wish I could've seen her on as Sandy. (Hello, btw, new to the forum )

Well Gabriella was simply stunning and amazing as Sandy. Tom The Wanted hasn't really got any better since I saw it in Manchester two and a half months ago. Less said about that the better. For my sins, the train was delayed so I staged doored (sorry) and got a pic with Gabriella. Everyone else was there for Jimmy Osmond or Tom The Wanted and I was like 'lol no first cover Sandy please'.

I'd heard it was a possibility that it could come in after Annie finishes its run in Jan. Tour stops in Dec (so far) but contracts run to March, so would work timing-wise. And obviously the Piccadilly has housed the show before, so no troubles there. But nothing confirmed as of yet.

I remember seeing this years ago with Lauren Samuels as Sandy and loving it. I didn't love it as much this afternoon. Danielle Hope was good as Sandy acting wise but not quite as good as Lauren Samuels vocally. Tom Parker was fine as Danny - did the job but nothing special. Louisa as Rizzo wasn't anything special either, stronger vocals would have helped. The rest of the cast were quite good too and did the best with what they had. Also - I can't believe I didn't realise how weak the plot is before.

When I saw it in Manchester I thought he was okay, nothing special but not dreadful either...yet when I did my Birmingham dash I thought he wasn't great at all.

I made the mistake of going to today's matinee too. Today has to be, without a doubt my worst theatre experience to date, and I include the tour of Wonderland when I say that. However this experience was not due to the performance. Today's audience were the worst audience I've ever sat amongst. Danielle Hope couldn't be heard throughout 'hopelessly devoted to you' and I'm sure I have bruises from the woman next to me continuously swaying side to side and banging into me. This audience has put me off ever returning to the show.

That's fine. I don't mind the first time he comes on but it becomes too much.
